Sarah Miles (born December 31, 1941 in Ingatestone , Essex ) is a British actress.

Life

Sarah Miles began studying acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London at the age of 15 . She made her film debut at the side of Laurence Olivier and Simone Signoret in 1962 in Play with Destiny , directed by Peter Glenville . For her acting performance, she received a nomination for the British Film Academy Award in the category "Most Promising Newcomer in a Leading Role" in 1963 ; the award went to Tom Courtenay .

As a stage actress, she only took selected film roles in the following years.

In 1964 she received another nomination for the British Film Awards for her role in Joseph Losey's The Servant . In 1971 she was nominated for an Oscar for her impersonation of Ryan's daughter in David Lean 's melodrama of the same name . In 1973 she played the title role in Embassy for Lady Franklin ; the film won the main prize at the Cannes International Film Festival that same year . In the 1978 crime film Dead Sleep Better , a remake of Dead Sleep tight , she again played the female lead alongside Robert Mitchum .

Sarah Miles was married twice to British playwright and screenwriter Robert Bolt , from 1967 to 1975 and from 1988 until his death in 1995.
