Schalke observation tower

The Schalke observation tower , which was built in 1892 by the then Harzklub Zweigverein Zellerfeld and restored in 1992 by the Harzklub Zweigverein Clausthal-Zellerfeld, is the oldest of four steel observation towers of the Harz Club in the Harz region. It is around 10.5 m high and weighs around 3.5 tons. From 1968 to 2002 the tower stood about 50 m southeast of the listening post, but after it was demolished on September 23, 2002, it was moved back to its old location about 100 m south-southwest of the summit. However, it only allows a good view to the east and south. The view falls to the Brocken , Wurmberg , mountain range Auf dem Acker with the Hanskühnenburg and to Clausthal-Zellerfeld . There is a Harz Club shelter next to the tower.

Schalke listening post

Since 1959, during the Cold War, the Schalker Horchposten , a site of the French air and telecommunications reconnaissance, was located near the summit , which was expanded in 1978/79 by a 64 m high reinforced concrete tower. This tower, which had been vacant since 1993, was blown up in 2002 and the entire system was removed by 2003. Further listening posts were located in the Harz Mountains on the Wurmberg and the Flurry Shark . The towers on the Ravensberg and the Bocksberg near Schalke are still there .

Traffic and walking

From the Auerhahn restaurant on Bundesstrasse 241 , a road that is up to 12  percent steep and closed to public motor vehicle traffic leads up to Schalke, the asphalt surface of which is in poor condition in places.

Longer hiking trails from Zellerfeld, Goslar and Oker lead up to Schalke . There is also a short, steep hiking trail from Mittelschulenberg , which leads past the Lower Schalke Pond and Festenburg . Another hiking trail is available from Hahnenklee via the capercaillie. The Schalke observation tower is included as No. 125 (Schalke Tower) in the system of stamping points of the Harzer hiking pin; the stamp box hanging on the standing next to the tower refuge Pötzschner Hut .
