The plant genus Schelhammera belongs to the timeless family (Colchicaceae). The only two species are common in eastern Australia and New Guinea .
description
Appearance and leaves
Schelhammera species grow as perennial herbaceous plants . These geophytes form subterranean, thin rhizomes as storage organs , which are covered with scale-like stipules . The roots are fibrous and can be bulbous. The prostrate or upright, branched stems are leafy.
The alternate and two lines disposed on the stem leaves are sessile. The leaf blade is simple. There is parallel nerve, with many leaf veins, most of which converge and only a few ends free.
Inflorescences and flowers
The flowers stand individually in the axils of the upper leaves or in terminal, umbel-like , zymous inflorescences . Bracts and bracts are missing. There are flower stalks.
The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The six identical bloom bracts are free, obovate-rhombic and articulated at their base. The color of the bracts is white to pink, depending on the species. Nectaries are present near the base of the bracts . There are two circles with three fertile stamens each. The mutually free stamens are broadened at their base. The dorsifix anthers are bent outwards and open with slits. Three carpels are fused together to form an upper, three- chamber ovary. In each ovary chamber , the ovules are arranged in two rows. The stylus splits into three stylus branches with scar tissue.
Fruits and seeds
The loculicidal, more or less fleshy capsule fruits contain few to many seeds. The seeds are brown or yellow.
Systematics and distribution
The two Schelhammera species occur in eastern Australia and New Guinea .
The genus Schelhammera was established in 1810 by Robert Brown in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae , pp. 273-274. Type species is Schelhammera undulata R.Br. The generic name Schelhammera honors the German physician and professor in Jena Günther Christoph Schelhammer (1649–1716). Synonyms for Schelhammera R.Br. are Kreysigia Rchb. , Kreisigia F. Muell. orth. var., Parduyna Salisb. nom. inval. Schelhammera R.Br. nom. cons. is conserved according to the ICN rules (Vienna ICBN Art. 14 & App. III) compared to the previously published parahomonym Schelhameria Heist. ex manufacture nom. rej. (Vienna ICBN Art. 53.3).
The genus Schelhammera belongs to the tribe Tripladenieae Vinn. & JCManning within the family Colchicaceae DC. ; it was formerly classified in the families Convallariaceae, Liliaceae and Uvulariaceae.
There are only two species of Schelhammera :
- Schelhammera multiflora R.Br. (Syn .: Kreysigia multiflora (R.Br.) Rchb. , Parduyna multiflora (R.Br.) Dandy ): It thrives in forests and at forest edges at altitudes between 0 and 1000 meters in Australia on the Cape York Peninsula as well in northeast Queensland and New Guinea.
- Schelhammera undulata R.Br. (Syn .: Parduyna undulata (R.Br.) Dandy ): It occurs sporadically in damp locations in open forests only in southeastern New South Wales and eastern Victoria .
The following are no longer included in the genus:
- Schelhammera pedunculata F. Muell. => Kuntheria pedunculata (F.Muell.) Conran & Clifford
use
