The Schneespitze (also Schneepinggl , Italian : Monte della Neve ) is a 3178  m slm (according to other measurements 3173  m above sea level ) high mountain in the Stubai Alps . The summit lies at the end of the Pflersch Valley in the main Alpine ridge , which also forms the border between the Austrian state of Tyrol and the Italian province of South Tyrol . The Schneespitze is the easternmost glaciated summit of the Stubai main ridge.

The Pflerscher Niederjoch ( 3065  m slm ) separates the summit in the west from the almost 100 meters higher flintstones that rise up further along the ridge , the next point in the ridge is the Pflerscher Hochjoch ( 3166  m slm ). To the south, the Schneespitze drops steeply to the Feuersteinferner . To the east lies the Stubenferner , which is framed by the southeast ridge and the northeast ridge. To the northeast, the mountain initially drops relatively flat, making it appear quite wide when viewed from the east.

Climbs

The normal route leads from the Magdeburger Hütte initially together with the path to the Magdeburger Scharte, the hut crossing to the Teplitzer Hütte . After just under 200 meters of altitude, the marked ascent path to the Schneespitze branches off to the right. The path descends somewhat below the Stubenferner, on the east bank of the lake created at the end of the glacier. You gain height over the northern moraine of the glacier, only a good bit above does the trail turn to the southwest, before reaching the northern Stubenscharte, also known as the Bremer Scharte. Now it goes over quite loose rock and blockwork, initially steep, later flatter over the northeast ridge to the summit with a cross . Since the trail leads over some snow fields, ice ax or crampons may be required depending on the conditions . For the ascent from the Magdeburger Hütte you should estimate 2½ hours.

Another possibility of ascent is via the west ridge from the Pflerscher Niederjoch . Thereby climbing difficulties of the II. Degree of difficulty have to be mastered. This ascent is usually done when crossing the ridge from the flint stones .
