The Black Sea Lowlands ( Ukrainian Причорноморська низовина ) is a lowland plain in southern Ukraine and southern Moldova . The depression extends from the Danube Delta in the east to Mariupol in Donetsk Oblast . The lowlands mainly follow the Black Sea Depression (Ukrainian Причорноморська западина ).

It includes parts of the Oblasts of Odessa , Dnipropetrovsk , Mykolaiv , Kherson , Zaporizhia , Donetsk and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea .

structure

Tectonically, the Black Sea lowlands are part of the Black Sea Depression , which itself consists of large almost horizontal layers of sediments, mainly from the Paleocene and Neogene sea deposits (various clays , sands , limestone ), overlaid with continental deposits from the Anthropocene (red-brown clay, loess usually over 20 m deep and loess clay soils ).

Tertiary deposits exist only in river valleys and along the coast . The Black Sea lowlands were covered by the Black Sea until the Lower Pliocene . Eventually the land dried up and was crossed by small rivers. This process was followed shortly afterwards by the elevation of the sea that flooded the estuaries and caused estuaries .

The lowlands are divided by a network of river valleys, including the Danube , Dniester , Southern Bug , Inhul , Inhulez , Dnieper , Molochna, and other smaller rivers. The river valleys are 80 m deep in the north and 20-25 m in the south. They are spacious, clearly delimited and often have three to five levels (terraces). Most rivers flow into extensive limanes or form wide swampy seascapes or floodplains .

The lowland slopes more and more towards the sea from 160 m in the north to 10–15 m in the south. However, the lowlands can also drop abruptly to the sea.
