Localization of Bavaria in Germany

The transmitter Hof (Hohensaas) was a medium wave transmitter of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation for radio, built in 1978 and blown up in 2018 .

Location

The location of the transmitter system was the eponymous industrial area Hohensaas on the western outskirts of Hof (Saale) near the federal highway 15 in the direction of Wölbattendorf, about four kilometers west of the Hof city center. The transmitter was located directly next to the weather station of the German Weather Service on the corner of An der Hohensaas / Hohe Straße opposite the yard of the district of Hof .

A 74-meter-high, top-fed steel truss mast has been used as the antenna carrier since 1999. In terms of manner, it corresponded to the transmission masts of the long-wave transmitters Aholming and Donebach .

Since the transmission mast disrupted the technical systems of the Bundeswehr in the nearby Hochfranken barracks, on the morning of October 28, 2018, a specialist company inspected the mast on behalf of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. This was followed by further dismantling.

Program history

The transmitter was put into operation as a small transmitter for the Hof (Saale) region for the introduction of the Geneva Wave Plan on November 23, 1978 on the frequency 520 kHz, which is below the actual medium wave band. The Bayern 1 program was broadcast in general until 1991 . The news program B5 was currently broadcast from May 1991 to August 2000 . After that, Bayern 1 was broadcast again until October 2007. Then there was a change to the new youth program Bavarian Open Radio , which was renamed on3-radio on May 5, 2008 . This was maintained until January 10, 2011. Since then, the Schlager and Volksmusikwelle Bayern plus has been broadcast until September 30, 2015.

From the beginning of 2015 to November 24, 2016, the location was also used to broadcast DAB , with only the ensemble of Bayerischer Rundfunk being broadcast on channel 11D.

Frequency, transmission power and coverage area

Since the Geneva Wave Plan of 1978, EMRP has been transmitted on the frequency 520 kHz with a transmission power of 0.2 kilowatts . Because this frequency is outside the official medium wave range, it was practically the only transmitter on this frequency, so that it could be used well for propagation tests in the medium wave range. In 1999 the new 74 meter high transmission mast was erected, for which the reflector mast of the Ismaning transmitter that was no longer needed was dismantled and rebuilt in Hof. However, since many modern radios were no longer able to receive the previous frequency of the Hof transmitter 520 kHz, which is not in the official medium wave band, the frequency was changed to 729 kHz in the course of the new building. For this, the transmitter was switched off for a few weeks. When it was restarted, the transmitter had to be switched off again on the afternoon of December 17, 1999 due to strong fluctuations in output. Since December 20, 1999 it has been broadcasting constantly on the new frequency. On September 30, 2015 at 12:45 pm, all Bavarian MW transmitters were switched off for good. The transmitter Hof (Hohensaas) broadcast with the transmitter Würzburg (Frankenwarte) , as before, on the same frequency in single wave operation .

The supply area extended to the urban area of Hof (Saale) and parts of the districts of Hof , Vogtland ( Saxony ) and Saale-Orla ( Thuringia ).
