The oleander-leaved Kleinia ( Kleinia neriifolia Haw. , Syn .: Senecio kleinia ( L. ) Less. ), Sometimes called monkey palm as an ornamental plant , is a species of plant from the genus Kleinia within the Asteraceae family that is endemic to the Canary Islands . The generic name Kleinia honors the German lawyer and scientist Jacob Theodor Klein (1685–1759).

description

Older plants grow as deciduous, branched, succulent shrubs and reach heights of 50 to 300 centimeters. The gray-green limbs of the stem axes are cylindrical and covered by the leaf scars of the leaves that have fallen off during the dry months. The fleshy, gray-green leaves are up to 12 centimeters long, lanceolate, but very different in width; they often resemble those of the oleander , but they can also be narrower.

The flowering period begins towards the end of the dry season, with the long flowering period comprising the summer and autumn months (around August to November). The slender, cup-shaped inflorescences have a single row covering (involucre) with a small outer covering. The flowers are whitish to yellow.

The achenes have a conspicuous pappus .

Distribution and systematics

The oleander-leaved Kleinie only grows in the Canary Islands , where it is found on all seven islands. It thrives at altitudes between 50 and 1000 meters and is mostly associated with shrubby euphorbias and a characteristic type of the Macaronesian succulent bush.

The first scientific description was in 1753 as Cacalia kleinia by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . The name Kleinia neriifolia Haw. was published by Haworth in 1812 . Christian Friedrich Lessing introduced this species as Senecio kleinia ( L. ) Less in 1831 . in the genus Senecio . But the name Kleinia neriifolia Haw. accepted. The as Senecio kleinia f. ovalifolia called broad-leaved form from Lanzarote and La Gomera is treated as a synonym .
