Sergei Eduardovich fresh ( Russian Сергей Эдуардович Фриш * June 19 . Jul / 1. July  1899 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 19th November 1977 in Siversky in Leningrad ) was a Russian physicist and university teacher .

Life

Frisch graduated from the 13th Petrograd grammar school in 1917 as the best with a gold medal. He then studied physics at the University of Petrograd . In 1919 he was accepted as one of the twelve best students (including WA Fock , JF Gross , AN Terenin , LW Schubnikow ) by DS Roschdestwenski and KK Baumgart in the recently founded Optics Institute (GOI) in Petrograd as a workshop laboratory assistant . After graduating with the highest honors in 1921, Frisch stayed at the University of Petrograd and at the GOI. In 1923 he took over the management of the physics seminar at the Electrotechnical Institute .

In 1932 Frisch organized the new chair for optics at the now University of Leningrad (LGU) and became its head (until 1972). In 1935 he was chosen for its work on the spectroscopy and gas discharge without defending a dissertation for Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences PhD. With his work he made important contributions to optics. He investigated the Paschen-Back effect , the fine structure and hyperfine structure of the spectral lines of Na , K , Ag , Cu , Ba , Ca and other elements , the magnetic moments of atomic nuclei , and he founded a school for plasma optics.

Frisch was dean of the physics faculty at the University of Leningrad (1937–1941), director of the research institute for physics at the LGU (1938–1941 and 1947–1957), co-editor of Westnik at the University of Leningrad and main editor of the magazine Optik und Spektoskopie, which he founded in 1956 . With others he organized the Commission on Spectroscopy, which was then incorporated into the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR) , and he was a member of the Commission on Spectroscopy of UNESCO . He supported the establishment of the Institute for Spectroscopy of the AN-SSSR and became a member of its Scientific Council.

Frisch was married to Alexandra Wassiljewna geb. Timoreva (1902-1995), with whom he wrote the well-known three-volume course in general physics . His daughter Marianna (* 1933) became a candidate for physical-mathematical sciences and lecturer at Physics Chair 1 at the LGU, whose sons also studied physics and became candidates for physical-mathematical sciences. Frisch died in the dach family in Siwerski .

The DS Roschdestwenski Society for Optics has been awarding members with the SE Frisch Medal every year since 2000 for outstanding achievements in research and teaching .
