Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq ( Danish Sermersooq Kommune , in German where you have a commune with lots of ice ) is a large Greenlandic municipality with a population of 22,738 people and an area of 635,600 km². The seat of the local government is the Greenlandic capital Nuuk .
location
Sermersooq is located in the southern part of Greenland across from west to east. In the north-east the municipality borders on the non-parish area of the Northeast Greenland National Park , in the north and north-west on Qeqqata Kommunia and in the south on Kujalleq commune .
history
Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq was founded on January 1st, 2009 by amalgamating the previous municipalities Ivittuut , Paamiut , Nuuk , Ittoqqortoormiit and Ammassalik . The municipality thus includes parts of the former administrative districts of Kitaa and Tunu .
