Seymour Nebenzahl (born July 22, 1897 in New York , † September 23, 1961 in Munich ) was a German-American film producer. After moving to the United States in 1938, he wrote himself mostly Seymour Nebenzal .

Life

From his father Heinrich Nebenzahl Seymour Nebenzahl was sent as a young man to Kingston upon Hull in England , where he worked in the retail trade and sold eggs . After completing a banking apprenticeship, he initially worked as a broker in the early 1920s, but speculative profits then enabled him to set up his own bank.

In 1925 Heinrich and Seymour Nebenzahl founded Heinrich Nebenzahl & Co GmbH. Nero-Film GmbH was founded as a joint subsidiary with Richard Oswald Produktion GmbH, which was converted into a stock corporation in 1927. Seymour Nebenzahl was not only a member of the board of directors, but also took on the position of head of production. He succeeded in binding important directors such as Georg Wilhelm Pabst and Fritz Lang to Nero-Film, which made the company the artistically ambitious production company in Germany over the course of a few years. Under Seymour Nebenzahl's direction, some of the most important films of classic Weimar cinema were made, such as Pandora's Box (1929), Diary of a Lost One (1929), Western Front 1918 (1930), The 3-Groschen-Oper (1931), Kameradschaft (1931), M (1931), The Mistress of Atlantis (1932) and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933).

Following the example of the United Artists , Seymour Nebenzahl and the actress and film producer Henny Porten founded the distribution company Vereinigte Star Film in 1930 .

After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, Seymour Nebenzahl, who was of Jewish origin, first went to Paris and in 1938 to Hollywood , where he worked for the Producers Releasing Company (PRC) from 1942 . He had always retained the American citizenship he had obtained through his birth in the USA . Also in 1942 founded subsidiary paying - together with Rudolph S. Joseph and Erwin O. Brettauer - own film company, the Angelus Pictures , which among other things, Reinhard Heydrich -Biografie "The Hangman" produced, in 1943 under the title Hitler's Madman in the rental came. In June 1944, Nebenzahl separated from Brettauer and founded Nero Films Inc. in Hollywood .

He only returned to Germany shortly before his death and founded Nero-Film GmbH in Berlin, which produced a single film under the direction of Franz Peter Wirth .

Seymour Nebenzahl was married to Else Jacoby, the daughter of the owner of the North German Wolldampfwäscherei, since 1921 and is the father of the writer and film producer Harold Nebenzahl (born March 31, 1922 in Berlin, † February 14, 2019 in Los Angeles). Seymour Nebenzahl is also a cousin of the director Robert Siodmak (through his father) .
