The farming village extends in the far northeast of the Bauges massif at the foot of the Pointe de la Sambuy, on a small plateau above the confluence of the Saint-Ruph and Ruisseau de Tamié streams.

In addition to the actual town center, Seythenex also included numerous hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Le Tertenoz ( 675  m ) on a terrace east of the Tamié
  • Les Combes ( 877  m ) on a debris cone at the western foot of the Dent de Cons
  • Les Prières ( 800  m ) in the valley of the Tamié
  • Les Losserands ( 780  m ) in the valley of the Tamié at the foot of the Montagne de Seythenex
  • Neuvillard ( 750  m ) in the Tamié valley at the foot of the Montagne de Seythenex

Neighboring towns of Seythenex are Faverges in the north, Mercury in the east, Plancherine and Tournon in the south and Jarsy and Giez in the west.

history

The Seythenex area was already populated during Roman times. Seythenex stands on the site of the Roman villa Sextinacus . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Sextinus and means something like estate of Sextinus . The spelling has changed from Seteney to today's Seythenex. In the 12th century the place gained a certain importance when the Abbaye de Tamié was founded and the road over the Col de Tamié was made passable. Ore mines were exploited on the Sambuy until the middle of the 19th century.

The municipality of Seythenex was merged with the former municipality of Faverges with effect from January 1, 2016 and merged to form the Commune nouvelle Faverges-Seythenex . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Annecy and the Canton of Faverges .

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Sigismond was rebuilt in 1851 in the neoclassical style. It has a remarkable late baroque altar. There is a 16th century chapel in Les Combes. Natural attractions include the waterfall of the Saint-Ruph brook and an adjacent, accessible cave in the valley below Seythenex.

In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861, 878 inhabitants were counted in Seythenex). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a significant increase in population.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Seythenex was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. Since the mid-1960s, the La Sambuy ski area has been equipped with a mountain railway and several ski lifts. Even in summer there is a beautiful view from the height of La Sambuy, and the mountain station of the chairlift is the starting point for several hiking trails.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Faverges over the Col de Tamié to Frontenex . The closest connection to the A430 motorway is around 18 km away.
