SAIC General Motors , SAIC GM for short , is a manufacturer of automobiles from the People's Republic of China . Shanghai General Motors , or SGM for short , has been handed down from earlier times .
Company history
The company was founded in 1997 in Shanghai . It even specifies June 12, 1997 as the date of foundation. Other sources cite May 16, 1997. Partners in this joint venture are SAIC Motor and General Motors . Initially, both held 50% of the shares. In 1999 the assembly of automobiles began. Buick supplied the parts. The brand name is Buick. Chevrolet was added in 2003 and Cadillac in 2004. At times the company was the market leader in China.

The first Buick model was the Century . The GL8 van followed. The Sail , based on the Opel Corsa B , had a notchback . Regal and Excelle , based on the Daewoo Lacetti , followed later . GM Korea supplied the parts for this.
In December 2003, the first Chevrolet appeared with the Spark . It was based on the Daewoo Matiz . The previous Buick Sail was marketed as the Chevrolet Sail from 2005.
No independent models are known for Cadillac , apart from a slightly extended wheelbase on one or two models. The first two models appeared in 2004. CTS and SRX were assembled by March 2006. Other models are or were ATS-L (2014-2019), CT5 (since November 2019), CT6 (since 2016), SLS (2007-2014), XT4 (since September 2018), XT5 (since 2016), XT6 (since July 2019) and XTS (2013-2019).
Registration numbers in China
In 2019, 871,506 new Buick cars , 212,506 Cadillac and 516,087 Chevrolet were registered in China .
