The Opel Corsa B is to late summer 2000 by the beginning of 1993 by General Motors and Opel built in Europe small car , which his predecessor Corsa A replaced.
Model history
General
In contrast to its predecessor, it was characterized by a strongly rounded body design, which was derived from the Opel Junior concept vehicle presented in 1983 . Exterior accents were set by means of wheel arch extensions made of plastic or the striking mirror caps. In March 1993 the Corsa B appeared as a three-door hatchback. The five-door model, which had a steeper C-pillar with a modified tailgate and narrower rear lights, followed in August 1993.
Initially the Corsa B was only available with 1.2- and 1.4-liter petrol engines with 33 and 44 kW, respectively, which came from its predecessor. In Austria, the 1.4 engine ( 8V ) was throttled to 40 kW (55 PS) in order to make maintenance cheaper in terms of tax and insurance.
The top model GSi again had the most powerful engine in the model series and had numerous equipment details that emphasized the sporty character, such as spoilers in the same color as the car. Between autumn 1993 and mid-1994 this version was offered with a 1.6-liter 80 kW Ecotec engine (109 PS). From the summer of 1994 until the end of production, the output dropped slightly to 78 kW (106 hp). The GSi had since 1995 is no longer the typical Verspoilerung.
In the summer of 1997, the engine range was expanded to include a newly designed 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with 40 kW (54 hp) and four-valve technology ( 12V engine ). Electric power steering ( EPS ) has been introduced for models with this engine to reduce fuel consumption. The 1.4-liter 8V engine was replaced in the spring of 1998 by the 1.2-liter 16V engine with 48 kW (65 hp). This 1.2-liter four-cylinder was based on the 1.0-liter three-cylinder (12V).
Initially, the 1.5-l diesel with 37 kW (50 PS) and the 1.5-l turbodiesel with 49 kW (67 PS) were available as diesel engines . From September 1995 the 1.7-liter naturally aspirated diesel with 44 kW (60 PS) replaced the 1.5-liter diesel with 37 kW. The diesel engines in the Corsa were not developed by Opel, but were taken over by Isuzu, a manufacturer that was still part of General Motors . These did not have power steering, because due to the design of the Isuzu engines, the alternator is at the front - where the servo pump is usually located.
The Corsa Sport was offered with a 1.4-liter 8V engine with 82 hp until August 1994 and was replaced by the 1.4-liter 16V with 66 kW (90 hp) after the factory holidays from September 1994.
Based on the Corsa B, the small Tigra sports coupé was created , which was produced between autumn 1994 and mid-2001. Both small cars are based on the same platform and have an identical floor pan . Other versions of the Corsa B (notchback, station wagon) were not offered in German-speaking countries.
Facelift
A facelift followed in July 1997 . It included modified front and rear aprons, wider side protection strips and standard side indicators; the design of the hub caps and aluminum rims has also been modernized. New fabrics and a three-spoke airbag steering wheel were introduced into the interior, the previously angular gear knob was replaced by a round one and the previous frame headrests were no longer required.
There was also a delivery van version of the Corsa B, which was sold as the Opel Combo from autumn 1993 to the end of 2001 . The Corsa B was replaced by the Corsa C in November 2000 .

Production in other markets
The Corsa B is still produced in some countries. In South Africa the original version (Europe before 1997) was offered as Corsa Lite , while in India the revised version (Europe from 1997) is sold under the names Corsa Sail (hatchback) , Corsa Joy (notchback) and Corsa Swing (caravan) .
The Corsa B was offered under the Chevrolet brand, especially in South American markets such as Uruguay . Depending on the market and version, the model was or is sold as a Corsa , Corsa Classic or Classic . The name of the Opel Corsa B Caravan, which is just over four meters long, is Chevrolet Corsa Station Wagon . It was built in Rosario (Santa Fe) from 1997 to 2001 . It was only imported into Europe by Opel Italia . It originally goes back to a German design: the design was the result of a journeyman's examination at the Opel factory in Rüsselsheim . However, Opel saw no sales opportunities for this model on the European market. Production of the Classic model continues, while the Corsa C has meanwhile been offered under the name Corsa . The name Chevrolet Corsa is no longer used.
In Japan and East Africa, the second generation Corsa was marketed as the Opel Vita .
In South Africa, on the other hand, the Corsa continued to be built at the General Motors plant near Port Elizabeth until 2004. However, when the model was offered in parallel to the more recent Corsa generation, the name was changed to Opel Corsa Swing . The only remaining country in which the Opel Corsa is still manufactured is India. The small Opel Corsa Sail and the Opel Corsa Swing station wagon are available here.
The notchback sedan was produced in China until 2009. From 1999 to 2005 it was called Buick Sail there , from then on under the name Chevrolet Sail , under which an independent model has since emerged.
