Shark Night 3D is an American horror film released in 2011 . Directed by David R. Ellis .

Sara and her college friends Malik, Beth, Nick, Maya, Blake, and Gordon drive to their parents' vacation home on a small island in Morris Saltwater Lake, Louisiana . There Sara meets her ex-boyfriend Dennis and his buddy Red. It should be the ultimate summer party weekend. Once there, they enjoy life, party, flirt and plunge into the water with their wakeboards . But when college football star Malik stumbles ashore with a bitten off arm after one of his cocky stunts, the party mood is over. Shocked, the friends set off in a small motorboat to the hospital on the mainland. Only on the lake do they realize that it wasn't an accident. They quickly discover that the lake is teeming with bloodthirsty sharks. The blood from Malik's wound attracts a shark that attacks the boat. Maya falls into the water and is eaten.

Dennis and Red confess that they brought the sharks into the lake. Dennis forces Gordon into the water with a gun, who is then devoured by a bull shark . Beth is also bitten to death by many cigar sharks while Dennis and Red are filming this spectacle. Malik armed himself with a harpoon and used it to kill a shark with a camera on its belly. He later sacrifices himself to save his friend Blake from a shark chase, who is nevertheless killed by a great white shark . Sheriff Sabin visits Sara and Nick and drugged their dog with a prepared soup. On this occasion, it emerges that Sabin, Dennis and Red were inspired by the Discovery Channel 's Shark Week film and wanted to make faces-of-death videos . While Sara is being taken away by Dennis and Red, Nick manages to free himself. He ignites a petrol can that he had kicked over unnoticed, Sabin catches fire and falls into the lake, where he is eaten by the tiger sharks .

Meanwhile, Dennis sinks Sara into a shark cage in the lake. Nick tries to free Sara. Dennis wants to prevent the rescue operation, but a great white shark devours him. Nick kills the shark and frees Sara. Nick, Sara and Sara's dog swim to the boat. The end of the film shows that there are still sharks in the lake.

  • The film was released in US cinemas on September 2, 2011, and in Germany on December 1, 2011.
  • For director David R. Ellis, the horror genre was by no means new territory: Before that, he was filming Final Destination 2 and Final Destination 4 as well as Snakes on a Plane .

criticism

The film got very bad reviews. On rottentomatoes.com the film only got 16%, on imdb.com it got 3.9 out of 10 possible points (as of September 2012).

  • Christoph Petersen von Filmstarts writes, among other things: “ The story has already been seen at least a thousand times: A group of college students end up in the wilderness, where one after the other blesses the temporal. The scheme works just as well with murderous hillbilly as it does with rabid wild animals ... but with sharks? After the second victim at the latest, none of the youngsters should be so stupid as to even approach the shark-infested lake .... "
