history

In the Middle Ages, primarily charitable foundations emerged in Bremen . The poor, the sick and pilgrims were welcomed into inns. The founders were then consistently wealthy landowners. The foundations were also dependent on other monetary and material donations. The foundations from the Middle Ages to the 17th century include or were: The St. Jürgen Hospital , the Isabeen Gasthau s, the Gertruden Gasthaus , the St. Jacobi Witwenhaus , the Nicolai Witwenhaus , the St. Remberti House , the St. Johannes Hospital, the old Mannhaus and the foundations for orphanages and for the divine booths .

The oldest institutions in Bremen that function as foundations today include the St.-Remberti-Stift , which was founded in 1303 at the latest, the St. Petri-Witwenhaus Foundation from 1536, and the Haus Seefahrt from 1545, which has been hosting the Schaffermahlzeit for 460 years , the Gottesbuden Foundation from 1564, the Alten Eichen Foundation from 1596 , which is considered the oldest youth welfare facility in Germany, and the St. Petri Orphanage Foundation from 1692.

In the 19th century, many private foundations were added, which primarily provided support in social matters, e.g. B. hospitals, church institutions or hostels. They were subject to the supervision of the Senate and its inspectors or the deaconry . Many foundations had financial difficulties and were no longer available; but some still exist today. Some foundations lost their capital due to inflation in the 1920s.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, a number of foundations were established that were dedicated to cultural, social, urban preservation and political purposes. Particular mention should be made of foundations for

In 1987 there were 144 foundations in the state of Bremen without family foundations, in 2000 there were 197 and in 2010 there were 303 foundations, 19 of them in Bremerhaven .

In 2003 on the initiative of entrepreneur Conrad Naber , entrepreneur Bernd-Artin Wessels and Senator a. D.
