Bernd-Artin Wessels (born June 22, 1941 in Großenhain ) is a German businessman and entrepreneur from Bremen a . a. as a shipowner ( Union Reederei ) and importer of tropical fruits as well as a patron .

biography

Family, education and work

Wessels was the son of Bernhard Heinrich Wessels. He grew up in Bremen. From 1948 he attended the primary school on Schaumburger Strasse and from 1954 the Hermann-Böse-Gymnasium . In 1959 he began his training as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant , which he finished in 1967. From 1964 to 1967 he studied at the German Foreign Trade and Transport Academy in Bremen and graduated in business administration . 1970 to 1973 he deepened his studies at the Academy for World Trade in Wiesbaden and then at the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg in the course of business mathematics / computer science .

From 1967 he worked at Harder, Meiser & Co. in the Scipio Group as a business economist in the corporate planning department. In 1972/73 he took over the central management and sales and in 1978 the management of Bratlanta BV in Rotterdam . In 1980 he became a limited partner and in 1981 a personally liable partner at Scipio GmbH & Co. KG in Bremen. This company and its daughters were u. a. in the fruit trade the largest German and later European group of companies in the industry. In 1987 he became a senior partner of the Scipio Group at home and abroad. In 1987 Atlanta AG was founded and Wessels took over as CEO. The group of companies became one of the most important companies in the fresh fruit trade. In 1996 he resigned from the board of directors of Atlanta AG and he became the sole managing partner of Scipio GmbH & Co KG , which held 100% of the shares in Atlanta AG . In 1998 he took over the chairmanship of the supervisory board of Atlanta AG and the chairmanship of the advisory board of the Heuer Group , of which he was a partner.

In Bremen he is also known as the “banana king”, according to the taz.

He has been married to Elke Wessels, b. Seevers.
