Shawn Brixey

Shawn Brixey (* 1961 in Springfield , Missouri ) is an American - Canadian university professor and media artist who works on the interface between art, science and technology.

life and work

Shawn Brixey studied design and media studies and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . He specialized, among other things, in individual software , interactive media , virtual reality , telepresence , telerobotics , mechatronics , multiplayer , stereoscopy , holography and wearable computing .

Brixey was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley , then at the University of Washington and is now Dean of the Faculty of Art at York University in Toronto , Canada. He holds numerous readings at home and abroad on contemporary digital art , experimental cinema, media technology , education and culture.

1987 Sky Chasm and Aqua Echo are two performances that Shawn Brixey realized in collaboration with Laura Knott in 1987 at documenta 8 in Kassel. Brixey exhibits internationally. His works have so far been on view at the Deutscher Künstlerbund , Cranbrook Art Museum, Yeshiva University Museum, MIT Museum, Contemporary Art Center of Cincinnati, Art Institute of Chicago , Olympic Winter Games 1998 , Expo 2000 , American Design and Architecture Triennial, Smithsonian Institution , Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, et cetera.

Brixey has received numerous awards including the National Endowment for the Arts and awards from the National Science Foundation , Apple Computer, AVID Incorporated, Adobe Inc. , Intel Corporation, Silicon Graphics , Newport Research Corporation, IBM , Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Derivative, Social Strata , d-box , Leica and Hughes Aircraft .
