Lawrence Joseph Cardinal Shehan (born March 18, 1898 in Baltimore , Maryland , USA ; † August 26, 1984 there ) was Archbishop of Baltimore .

Life

Lawrence Shehan studied at the Saint Charles College in Ellicott City , Maryland , at Saint Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and at the Pontifical Athaneum "De Propaganda Fide" in Rome the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . He received on 23 December 1922, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a pastor in different communities dioceses Baltimore and Washington, DC He also served from 1929 to 1936 deputy director and from 1936 to 1945 director of Catholic Charities USA. Pope Pius XII appointed him in 1945 titular bishop of Lydda and auxiliary bishop in Baltimore. The episcopal ordination received Lawrence Shehan on 12 December 1945 the apostolic delegate in the United States, Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Cicognani ; Co- consecrators were Peter Leo Ireton , Bishop of Richmond , and John Michael McNamara , Auxiliary Bishop in Baltimore and Washington .

In 1953, Lawrence Shehan became the first bishop of Bridgeport . On July 10, 1961, Pope John XXIII appointed him . the titular archbishop of Nicopolis ad Nestum and Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Lawrence Shehan became Archbishop of Baltimore on December 8 of the same year. He attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . Pope Paul VI accepted him on February 22, 1965 as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Clemente in the college of cardinals and made him president of the Central Committee for the International Eucharistic Congresses. Lawrence Cardinal Shehan resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Baltimore on April 2, 1974 for reasons of age. He died on August 26, 1984 in Baltimore and was buried there in the Cathedral of Mary Queen .
