Simon Ernst (born April 2, 1994 in Düren ) is a German handball player who has been playing for the German Bundesliga club Füchse Berlin since summer 2018 .

Career

Simon Ernst began his career as a handball player at the age of four at Birkesdorfer TV 1864. In 2009 he went to TSV Bayer Dormagen , where he played in the B and A youth and from 2012 also with the men's team in the 3rd division . For the 2014/15 season, the 1.95 meter tall back player moved to VfL Gummersbach , where he signed a two-year contract. He has been under contract with Füchsen Berlin since the 2018/19 season . Although Ernst tore his second cruciate ligament tear in Gummersbach within a year, his contract was extended prematurely until 2021. After he returned to work at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, he suffered another cruciate ligament rupture on October 13, 2019. It is uncertain whether he will be able to continue his career.

National team

So far, Ernst has played around 50 games for the German youth and junior national team. In 2012 he won the U-18 European Handball Championship with the team and was voted the tournament's best playmaker. In 2013 and 2015 he took part in the U-21 handball world championship. In 2015 he won the bronze medal with the U-21 team and was selected as the best backcourt left in the All-Star team.

On February 1, 2014, Ernst played his first game for the German national B team in the opening act of the HBL All-Star Games 2014 . In the 31:33 defeat against SC DHfK Leipzig , he scored two goals. On January 4, 2015, he made his debut in the senior team in the preparation game for the 2015 World Cup against Iceland in Reykjavík . At the European Championships in Poland in 2016 , he became European champions with the German team with a 24:17 victory over Spain .
