The Warriors Football Club is a Singaporean football club . Until 2019, the club played in the professional Singapore Premier League , the top division in Singapore.

Warriors FC is the country's most successful club. Since the introduction of the S. League in 1996, he has won the championship nine times, making him the record champions. He was also able to win the current national cup, the Singapore Cup (introduced in 1998) four times . Before founding the professional S. League he was able to win the national championship three more times and his national cup four times.

Club history

The association represents the armed forces of Singapore (SAF). It was founded in 1975 as the Singapore Armed Forces Sports Association (SAFSA) to give talented national service football players the opportunity to play competitive football. By 1996 SAFSA had won the championship three times and the cup three times.

When the S. League was founded, the SAF withdrew the SAFSA from the league operations of the National Football League, which was the top division to date, and founded the Singapore Armed Forces Football Club on February 16, 1995 , which was based on the success of the SAFSA as one of eight clubs was allowed to participate in the newly introduced professional league.

The SAFFC dominated the new S. League from the start and is now the record champion with eight titles.

By winning the championship in 2008, the club was allowed to qualify for the AFC Champions League 2009 . In the first round, the club won against Provincial Electricity Authority FC from Thailand. In the final, PSMS Medan from Indonesia was defeated and the Armed Forces became the first Singaporean club to enter the Champions League. The former MVP of the AFC Champions League Therdsak Chaiman played a major role in this success . In both games he scored an important goal.

On January 20, 2013, the club was called Warriors Football Club .

From the 2020 season, the club was suspended due to financial problems.

Mascot and nickname

The mascot, which can also be seen in the club's coat of arms, is a rhinoceros . The club's nickname is "The Warriors". Originally the club wanted to have a "Warrior" as a mascot, but that was not in the sense of the S. League. She only wanted animals as mascots and turned down the warrior. Instead, the S. League suggested choosing a wolf . The SAF did not like this because a wolf did not reflect the image and characteristics of the SAF. Therefore it was decided to use the rhinoceros as heraldic animal.
