The Socket A (also: Socket 462 or Socket A (462) ; English Socket A , Socket 462 or Socket A (462) ) is a processor socket for AMD - processors of Athlon - Duron - Athlon XP -, Sempron - and Geode series.

The Socket A replaced the previous slot A off after AMD processor core and the cache of its processors on a common The could produce.

Socket A was one of the longest-lasting sockets in PC history and was only replaced by Socket 754 for Athlon 64 and the new Sempron, Socket 939 for Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX and Opteron and Socket 940 for Athlon FX and Opteron. The last Athlon XP processor was produced by AMD in early July 2005. However, boards are still being produced for this socket because AMD offers particularly energy-saving processors under the name Geode NX 1500 @ 6W. These motherboards are equipped with either SiS 741GX or VIA KN400A chipsets.

The first IA-32 processors with a clock rate of more than 1  GHz were delivered based on Socket A.
