  • Barton

The Athlon MP is the multiprocessor variant ( SMP ) of the AMD Athlon XP (K7).

It should be used in inexpensive workstation and server systems . But this success was denied him because the support of the big server manufacturers like IBM , HP or Sun was missing. The operational reliability in the form of suitable chipsets , which is extremely popular in the professional sector, was also missing , which meant that many customers continued to resort to Intel Xeon systems.

The Athlon MP is structurally identical to the Athlon XP processors, but multiprocessor capability is guaranteed. It is based on the processor cores ( cores ) Palomino, Thoroughbred A / B and Barton. The spectrum ranges from 1,000 MHz to a P rating of 2800+.

The successor to the Athlon MP is the Opteron , which brought more success to AMD with its 64-bit expansion AMD64 and great support from IBM, HP, Sun and Cray .
