The summer festival Vorstraße feat. Spittaler Straße (originally or short summer festival Vorstraße , also Vorstraßenfest ) is a music festival that takes place annually on the second weekend in June on the grounds of the two student dormitories Vorstraße and Spittaler Straße in the Horn-Lehe district of Bremen . Its origins go back to 1977. It is now the largest festival organized by students in Bremen and attracts around 7,000 visitors every year. In the tradition of a student festival, it is aimed primarily at a young target group and is also free of charge.

History, venue and concept

In the summer of 1977, the residents of the Vorstraße dormitory in Bremen held a summer party for the first time in the form of a barbecue in the large inner courtyard of the dormitory. This resulted in an annual music festival with live music and a wide range of cultural and culinary offers, which takes place on the second weekend in June on Friday and Saturday from the afternoon.

Due to the increasing number of visitors, the inner courtyard of the Vorstraße dormitory was finally no longer sufficient and the summer festival was expanded in 2008 to the area of the newly built and directly adjacent Spittaler Straße dormitory. Both the so-called residential park Am Fleet / Vorstrasse (building complex with around 230 spaces) and the so-called residential park Am Fleet / Spittaler Strasse (7 houses with a total of around 430 spaces) belong to the student residential complexes of the Bremen Student Union and are managed by them. Since then, celebrations have taken place both in the inner courtyard of the Vorstrasse dormitory and between and around the individual buildings of the Spittaler Strasse dormitory. In addition to the traditional “Hofbühne” in the Vorstrasse inner courtyard, a second mobile stage, the “Fleetbühne”, will be set up next to the Uni-Fleet-Süd at the Spittaler Strasse 1 building.

The extended festival is called Sommerfest Vorstraße feat. Spittaler Strasse expresses itself . The music festival is now organized jointly by the residents of both student residences, who are part of the Wohnpark Am Fleet e. V. have merged. In addition to the traditional summer festival, the association organizes other events in the two dormitories throughout the year, promotes the community and represents the interests of the residents towards the Studierendenwerk Bremen. The organization of the summer festival takes place on a voluntary basis and is the responsibility of the association and in coordination with the Studierendenwerk Bremen and the city of Bremen. The music festival has a non-commercial character - it is free of charge and the food and drinks on offer are calculated in such a way that no profit is made. In addition, the residents of the dormitory, who belong to different cultures, offer self-prepared international dishes for sale in their own tent for a small donation.

After the number of visitors had risen continuously to around 3,000 people by 2007, around 5,000 visitors and guests were recorded since the end of the 2000s / beginning of the 2010s after the expansion in 2008. In 2016 the number of visitors was around 6,000, and in 2017 around 7,000 people came.

The Vorstrasse summer festival is considered “legendary among students” and a “Bremen institution” ( Weser-Kurier ). It is the biggest festival in Bremen after the Breminale .
