Sophia Carolina Benda
Sophia Carolina Benda (baptized March 27, 1787 in Berlin ; † May 8, 1844 in Karlsruhe ) was a German actress and singer . She was the oldest child of the Berlin court actor and singer Carl Ernst Eberhard Benda and a granddaughter of the composer Georg Anton Benda .
Life
Seven of her father's theater colleagues were her godparents, so it is not surprising that (Sophia) Carolina Benda was seen on stage from the age of three, as were her siblings later. She and one of her sisters were trained by August Wilhelm Iffland and appeared in plays and music in Breslau between around 1803 and 1811. On Iffland's recommendation, they had made a guest appearance in Karlsruhe, and Carolina Benda was accepted there. As a valued actress, she appeared with well-known artists of her time, mostly in lover roles or as a heroine. In addition, she repeatedly had foreign engagements such as B. in Breslau, Munich, Mannheim, Vienna, last there at the Leopoldstädter Theater in April 1821. 1832–1833 she was a guest actress at the Hoftheater Karlsruhe, because of increasing visual impairment she finally gave up her stage career and, supported by her friends, she spent the following years entirely in Karlsruhe, where she campaigned for thorough music and language education for the next generation.
The actress and author Karoline Bauer partly used Carolina Benda's biography in her memoir "Verschollene Herzensgeschichten - Stella": however, she was called "Amalie Benda" in them, not to be confused with Carolina Benda's cousin, the actress Amalia Carolina Louisa Benda , daughter of Hermann Christian Benda , court actor a. -singer in Weimar under Goethe.
