Summer of Expectation (Original title: Spencer's Mountain ) is an American feature film by Delmer Daves from 1963. The screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by Earl Hamner Jr. The novel and the film were the basis for the later television series The Waltons . The film premiered on May 16, 1963 and opened in German cinemas on November 1, 1963.

Clay Spencer lives in the mountains of the Teton Range in Wyoming with his wife Olivia and nine children. He is the only one of nine grandchildren to inherit and continue to farm the land. His eldest son Clayboy is about to graduate from high school, something no Spencer has done yet. Impressed by the hard work and learning of the boy, his teacher Miss Parker suggests him for a scholarship at the University of Wyoming. But the only option for studying is a theology scholarship, which, however, meets with resistance from the church opponent Clay Spencer.
Clayboy's application is rejected because he did not have a Latin class. He promises Father Goodson to attend every Sunday service. For this the priest teaches him in Latin. When Clayboy is studying at the city library, he becomes aware of Claris Coleman and falls in love with her. Claris is the wealthy daughter of his father's employer.
The Spencers suffer a misfortune. The grandfather is killed by a felled tree. Shortly thereafter, the university accepted Clayboy's application, but he didn't have enough money for the scholarship. Clay's father realizes that he must make sacrifices for the future of the Spencers. He sells the piece of land on which he is currently building a dream house for his wife. In September the family says goodbye to Clayboy, who is going to university.

The film grossed $ 4.75 million in the United States. The film was shot in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
The film is set in the then present in the early 1960s, while the story of The Waltons was later moved to the 1930s.
For Donald Crisp it was the last role in a film. The 1942 Oscar winner died eleven years after that film. For Mimsy Farmer, it was her debut in a movie. Bronwyn FitzSimons, who played an unmentioned minor role as university secretary, is the daughter of leading actress Maureen O'Hara. Another relative of hers is her brother James O'Hara, who plays one of Clay Spencer's brothers. The Spencer's baby, Donnie, is portrayed by Michele Daves, a granddaughter of director Delmer Daves. Another Spencer daughter, Becky, is played by Veronica Cartwright , not mentioned in the credits . Also not mentioned in the credits was the later Tarzan actor Mike Henry .
The costumes came from Marjorie Best (Oscar 1950).
