occupation

Spielzeit (international title: Playtime ) is a German short film by the US director Lucas Mireles from 2012.

action

Motif in the film: "The Grim Reaper" by the sculptor August Schmiemann.

In three episodes, the film tells the life of people on Sunday in Cologne.

Jan waits on the banks of the Rhine for his date Matilda, who comes too late and not alone. She wants to persuade Jan to have a threesome with her and Andy, but he turns it down.

When Andy and Matilda arrive at a "quiet place" near the pasha to have sex in a warehouse, they are disturbed by a group of boys. Their soccer games get Andy angry. After further provocations by the boys, Andy pursues them, but loses their trail.

The boys split up in the Melaten cemetery . Tim discovers the ancient sculptures - including “The Grim Reaper” by the sculptor August Schmiemann - and lets himself be guided by trumpet music in order to find his friends again.

background

The film was shot in Cologne in summer 2010 . The production, financed with funds from the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia , was created in a cooperation between the International Film School Cologne and the University of California, Los Angeles . This cooperation resulted in three more short films, which were combined with Spielzeit to form the compilation “People on Sunday 2010” - a homage to Billy Wilder's first film work Menschen am Sonntag from 1930.

reception

The film premiered on January 21, 2012 as part of the  2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City , Utah . Spielzeit was one of 64 films selected from 7,675 submissions and, along with the short documentary Into the Middle of Nowhere, was the only German contribution in 2012. Spielzeit was nominated in the “Best International Short Film” category.
