history

The Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Sprague

Sprague was first settled by William Newman, who founded a pub at the place. The city was officially recognized on November 28, 1883. It was originally called Hoodooville after the local original William Burrows, who was called Hoodoo Billy. The name was changed in honor of the former general and later railroad official John W. Sprague.

Sprague was destroyed by fire on August 3, 1895. The fire and the subsequent decision by the Northern Pacific Railroad not to rebuild the city led, after a controversial debate, to a relocation of the county seat , which Sprague held after an election in 1884, to Davenport.

The Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Sprague was originally built in 1883. The current building in neo-Gothic style dates back to 1902, is located immediately south of the previous location and was consecrated by the Bishop of Nesqually . It was added to the US Department of Interior 's National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

A temporary stream called Negro Creek flows through the city. There was much debate about the name, but it has survived to this day.
