Jumping festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Spring Festival is an annual festival for electronic art and music in Graz , which took place for the first time in 2001. The title of the festival changed in the first decade in line with the year, so the springeight took place in 2008. Since 2010 this title has not been used in the sense of a uniform appearance, the festival has been called the Spring Festival since then. After the bankruptcy of the Zeiger cultural association and Friendsof Spring GmbH, ZARGentur Projekt GmbH took over the organization and execution in 2015 and restarted the festival under the name "springfestival reloaded". The "Spring" traditionally took place around the Corpus Christi weekend in various Graz clubs, halls and pubs and lasts from Wednesday to Sunday morning. In 2015 the festival will take place in the first week of June.

concept

The "Spring" is an urban indoor festival that is spread over several clubs and event halls in Graz and is also intended to appeal to an international audience. The idea of the organizers behind the festival since its inception until today is to bring the feeling of a festival in the country into the city and at the same time combine it with urban influences.

The spatial proximity of the event locations should be emphasized. Many of the locations are very close to one another in the city center and can be easily reached on foot. There are shuttle buses for the Helmut List Hall, which is a little further away, and the town hall. The main events start in the evening and in some clubs last until late morning on the following day.

The venues have changed a lot over the past ten years. Due to the annually increasing number of visitors, only larger venues are now played with main acts. However, several small bars and pubs also take part in the "Spring". There you can usually find DJ sets with free admission.

Current main venues

An important aspect is the mixing of electronic art and music. In addition to the main evening program, there are also many workshops , panel discussions and other small events related to the "Spring". In the Helmut-List-Halle, the jumping festival cooperates with the visual artists from MAPLAB.

Another special feature is the balanced mix of local DJs, young up-and-coming artists and established artists. Although national and international greats are represented every year, the focus is increasingly on young, sometimes local, artists and acts.

Main events

Yelle with band at the 2011 Spring Festival

The "Spring" tries to give a broad picture of the electronic music scene. In addition to DJs and DJ sets, electronically oriented bands are also included in the program. In 2011 this was the case with the Crystal Fighters , Yelle and Atari Teenage Riot . Label nights are also often offered. One location is all about a music label that designs the entire evening with its artists. In 2011 this was the case in ppc with the HospitalityNight . This in cooperation with the British was held drum and bass label Hospital Records , performing artists have included London Elektricity , Camo & Krooked and John B .

Opening concerts

There has been an opening concert since 2005, for which tickets are also offered separately. Originally the opening concert always took place in the casemates on Grazer Schloßberg , but due to structural restructuring the maximum number of people allowed there was greatly reduced, which is why the opening concert was moved to the Helmut List Hall .

Red Bull Music Academy

The Red Bull Music Academy has been an integral part of the jumping festival since 2005. This is a mix of workshops, discussions and interviews - described in a short self-description as 'sessions' - supplemented by the musical focus of the Academy at the main events. In 2011, Dan Snaith alias Caribou and the Graz-based sound researcher and university professor Dr. Werner Jauk participated.

Side events

Jumping sessions

Since 2011 the jumping sessions have been taking place in the afternoon. The aim is to create a platform for electronic arts to discuss design, digital art , or experimental technologies. The guest speakers are no strangers, but rather outstanding figures from the creative industry. Tickets for the jumping sessions can be purchased separately. The jumping sessions are to be expanded over the next few years and the concept is to be integrated even more into the festival.

Springkids

With Springkids, the organizers started an attempt in 2011 to offer a family and child-friendly program. For example, small instruments are built here in handicraft workshops and then child-friendly jam sessions are organized with experienced musicians. Springkids is offered free of charge.

Jumping teen

This is a youth contest for young people. Young up-and-coming musicians and DJs can take part in the contest with their tunes , the winners receive a prize as part of the spring festival.

Others

The spring festival was nominated in 2010 and 2011 for the European Festival Award in the category “Best Indoor Festival”.

The festival's website was awarded the Green Panther Gold, the advertising prize of the WKO Steiermark, in the Internet category in 2010, and the Green Panther Silver the following year.
