Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The Catholic parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Carrières-sur-Seine , a parish in the Yvelines department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built in the first half of the 13th century. The church consecrated to John the Baptist is on the list of the Inventaire général du patrimoine culturel in France.

history

Even before the construction of today's high-rise church, there was a modest chapel on the banks of the Seine in Carrières-sur-Seine, which was formerly called Carrières-Saint-Denis . With the construction of the new church in the years after 1226, the place was raised to a parish . In 1618 the north aisle was built, which is indicated by the year on a pillar in the nave . In 1812, extensive construction work took place under the direction of the architect Desmarais. The nave, the choir and the side chapels were largely demolished and rebuilt.

architecture

inner space

The square bell tower covered by a pyramid roof rises on the northwest corner of the nave . The nave has two aisles and flows into a recently closed choir in the east. The main nave is covered by a groin vault, the north aisle has a barrel vault . The vaults rest on massive pillars and wall columns, which are decorated with Ionic capitals in the north aisle .

Leaded glass window

The church is equipped with several leaded glass windows. Two windows are dated to the end of the 19th century. St. Margaret of Antioch is shown on a window with her attributes , the cross, a palm frond and the dragon. On the other window the archangel Raphael can be seen accompanying the young Tobias . Tobias holds a fish in his hand, through whose bile his father Tobit is to be cured of blindness.

The window with the scene of Mary's instruction bears the signature: “Ch. Champigneulle Paris 1923 ”. It was made in the Champigneulle glass painting workshop in Paris , which was then headed by Jacques-Charles Champigneulle (1907–1955), grandson of the glass painter Louis-Charles-Marie Champigneulle (1853–1905). Another window shows a Madonna and Child.

Altarpiece

Altarpiece (copy)

In 1835, during construction work in the church, an altarpiece was rediscovered that had been hidden behind the then St. Mary's altar . The triptych , which consists of three limestone blocks carved with relief, is dated to the first half of the 12th century. A Madonna enthroned in the middle part, the Annunciation on the left and the baptism of Jesus on the right . Traces of earlier color versions can still be seen on the reredos. The altarpiece is on the list of historical monuments in France. In 1999 a copy of the reredos, which has been kept in the Medieval Sculpture Department at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1915, was inaugurated in the church of Carrières-sur-Seine.
