St. Bonifatius Church (Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld)
The St. Bonifatius Church is a Catholic church in the Friedrichsfeld district of Mannheim . It was built between 1897 and 1899 according to plans by Ludwig Maier in the neo-Gothic style.
history
Friedrichsfeld, founded in the 17th century, is a comparatively young settlement. The church in Seckenheim was responsible for the local Catholics . Benefiting from the construction of the railway, the number of inhabitants grew strongly in the 19th century, so that the desire for a church of their own arose. With financial support from the Bonifatius Association of the Archdiocese of Freiburg and the Palatinate Catholic Church Schaffnei , the groundbreaking ceremony was carried out in September 1897. On September 26, 1899, Auxiliary Bishop Justus Knecht consecrated the church, which was consecrated to St. Boniface . After Friedrichsfeld had already become a branch parish in 1897, St. Bonifatius was raised to an independent parish in 1905.
After the damage from World War II and a violent storm in 1954 had been repaired , the church received two aisles in 1960. A general renovation took place by 1998, during which parts of the neo-Gothic interior were restored. In 2002 the parishes of St. Bonifatius, St. Aegidius ( Mannheim-Seckenheim ), St. Andreas and St. Brother Klaus ( Edingen-Neckarhausen ) merged to form the pastoral care unit Mannheim-Südost.
description
The St. Bonifatius Church is set back from the street in the south of Friedrichsfeld. It was originally a single-nave church with a 3/8 choir closure . There were also two modern aisles. The yellow brick nave is 29 meters long, 11 meters wide and 11 meters high. The church tower with a pointed tent roof stands on the choir flank, on the opposite side is the sacristy.
The altar of crystalline marble dates back to 1968. A crucifix was to Gothic tradition as a triumphal cross hung in the choir. It was once placed on the outside wall of the church to commemorate the fallen of the congregation before it was restored in 1988. A statue of Anna selbdritt and a statue of Mary date from around 1500. The Sacred Heart statue was once part of the former high altar of the St. Sebastian Church and was created around 1900. A picture panel unites Jesus and the four evangelists, who come from the defunct pulpit .
The corners are decorated with finials
The window in the choir created in 1954 Emil Wachter . They show Mary's path of faith and the life of Boniface. The eight windows in the nave depict saints ( Edith Stein , Hildegard von Bingen , Elisabeth of Thuringia , Theresia of the Child Jesus , Francis of Assisi , Christophorus , Franz Xaver and Bernhard von Baden ). Four date from 1936, the other four and the windows on the tower floor were designed by Michael Mannel in 1995/96 . The windows of the aisles were designed by Karl Rödel . The organ of Michael Weise has 22 registers on two manuals and pedal and was inaugurated 1,972th
The four bells of St. Bonifatius Church were cast in 1953 by the Schilling bell foundry . The ringing is coordinated with the bells of the neighboring Evangelical Johannes Calvin Church .
