history

prehistory

In 1228 a pastoral care post was first mentioned in Sirnach . Until 1679 clergy from Fischingen monastery looked after the parish of Sirnach. After the Second Kappel War in 1531, the Sirnach church was given to both the Catholics and the Reformed for equal use. Until 1829 the pastor was elected by the cathedral chapter of Constance . As early as the end of the 19th century, there were initial efforts to resolve the equal use of the old church, as the church was no longer sufficient for both denominations due to the growing population. In 1934, the two denominations decided that the church of Sirnach would be left to the Catholic parish, and the Reformed parish built three new churches in Sirnach, Münchwilen and Eschlikon .

Münchwilen was already a parish in the Middle Ages . The ecclesiastical center, however, was in St. Margarethen . In the 15th century the two parishes of Sirnach and St. Margarethen merged into a single parish. As a result of industrialization , Münchwilen experienced an upswing and an increase in the Catholic population at the end of the 19th century, so that in the 20th century the desire for its own parish church arose. On July 13, 1947, 72 church citizens founded the Münchwilen church building association . After a period of fundraising and the acquisition of various building plots, the land for the construction of the church was bought in 1961. With the consecration of the church on March 24, 1968, the parish of St. Antonius Münchwilen was established and separated from the parish of Sirnach.

The parish of St. Antonius includes the villages of Münchwilen and St. Margarethen and has 2185 Catholics (as of 2016). In St. Margarethen there is a medieval chapel dedicated to St. Margaritha is consecrated. The parish of Münchwilen belongs to the parish of Sirnach.

Development and construction history

On May 21, 1962, the Sirnach parish approved a loan for an architecture competition. Out of 21 submitted drafts, the project by Karl Higi , Zurich, was awarded first prize on July 4, 1964 . On September 9, 1965, the electorate of the parish approved the credit for the construction of the church, for which the groundbreaking took place on Easter Monday , April 11, 1966 . On September 11, 1966, the episcopal commissioner Johannes Haag consecrated the foundation stone of the church. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on March 17, 1967, and on March 24, 1968, the former Bishop of Basel , Franziskus von Streng , consecrated the church on behalf of his successor Anton Hänggi .

Building description

Church tower and exterior

Various entrances lead to the Church of St. Antonius. The church building can be reached via low steps from Waldeggstrasse and Weinfelderstrasse . At ground level through a covered corridor, the path leads from the cemetery to the west of the church to the main portal of the church. The parish center is located in the basement of the church. The secretariat and sacristy are attached to the church , and the rectory is connected to the church via a covered corridor. The exposed concrete tower, on which a clock is attached and in which sound holes allow the bells to sound in all directions, rises prominently above the building .

The tower has a five-part bell that was cast on September 3, 1966 in the Emil Eschmann bell foundry , Rickenbach . On October 7, 1967, the bells came to Münchwilen and were consecrated the following day by Canon Alois Roveda. The school children from Münchwilen and St. Margarethen raised the five bells in the tower on October 9th. In the New Year's Eve 1968, the five bells rang for the first time. The tone sequence of the five bells results in the motif Salve Regina with a doubled basic tone:

Interior and artistic equipment

Architect Karl Higi writes about the Church of St. Anton: «The design of the Antonius Church was made entirely from within. The collection of the congregation around the altar table and the place of the Annunciation gives the basic shape [...] The band of light hovering over this basic shape provides glare-free light. So the outer appearance is solely the image of the inner principle [...] the model was to create a cheerful and festive space based on human dimensions. "

The interior of the church is determined by the view of the chancel, towards which the pews are set up in a semicircle. The walls of the church are polygonally staggered in angular and rounded wall segments around the worship room. The roof construction is striking, thanks to which the concrete roof appears to float freely above the church. Five pillars carry the construction and lead with their blue coloring to the roof, which is designed in different shades of blue in free geometric shapes. The ceiling paintings and the window cladding come from Paul Stöckli , Stans. The choir was designed by Piero Selmoni, Bellinzona. Angelika Nauer, Freienbach, designed the two church portals ; Ferdinand Hasler, Altstätten, made the portals. He also made the lecture cross , the candle sticks and the tabernacle . The originally white room was redesigned over time based on the model of the Taizé church : As in Taizé, tubes mounted on top of each other serve as candle carriers that surround the altar. Orange strips of fabric are attached to the choir wall, which enhance the warm colors of the burning candles. In the worship chapel, a worship tabernacle invites you to meditate.
