Church of St. Bartholomew in Apfeltrach

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew is located in Apfeltrach in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The church is a listed building.

history

The oldest part of the St. Bartholomew Church is the substructure of the church tower . It dates from the second half of the 14th century or around 1400. A pointed arch arcade walled up in the 15th century is located on the west side of the tower. The church was rebuilt in the late 15th century. In this new building, the southern tower wall was included in the choir . The upper floors of the church tower with cloverleaf arch frieze and gable roof date from this time. At the beginning of the 16th century, the sign was added on the south side. In the sign there is a groin vault . In the years 1766 and 1767 the choir was redesigned and the building was renewedNave ceiling instead.

Building description

The church is an exposed brick building, only the west facade is an exception and is plastered. Keel arch friezes on lily consoles are located under the eaves. The plastered west facade and the north side of the nave are adorned with arched friezes. The hall of the church is closed with a basket-arched stab cap barrel. The hall is structured by narrow, flat pilasters . The gallery on the west side of the nave dates from the middle of the 19th century . The retracted, three-sided closed choir adjoins the nave. There is a stitch cap vault in the choir. A ribbed vault on grotesque consoles is located in a room on the ground floor of the church tower. The choir of the previous choir tower church was formerly housed in this room .

Furnishing

inside view

The high altar was created around 1767. On the side of the high altar there are figures of St. Ulrich and St. Afra . In the extension of the high altar is the figure of St. Bartholomew under a canopy . The altar panel from 1852 shows Christ on the cross. There are paintings in curved passages to the right and left of the high altar. These show the hearts of Jesus and Mary. On pedestals are the figures of St. Anthony of Padua and St. John of Nepomuk . The side altars were donated in 1789. Both side altars are early classical. The right side altar shows St. Anne with Maria in the altarpiece . An Immaculata is shown in the extract . The left side altar shows the birth of Christ in the altar leaf. The Annunciation is shown in the extract from the left side altar. The altar leaves on the side altars were created around 1850/1860. Both the altar sheet of the high altar and the altar sheets of the side altars were created by Johann Kaspar .

The font dates from around 1800, the pulpit was created around 1767. The choir stalls date from the end of the 18th century . Half-length figures in the church show the apostles , these date from around 1765 to 1770 and can be ascribed to Bernhard . A life-size crucifix comes from the first half of the 16th century.

Fresco in the nave, St. Bartholomew refuses to sacrifice to an idol

The frescoes in the church were created by Franz Xaver Bernhard . In the choir the glory of St. Bartholomew is represented. Medallions depict scenes from the life of the saint. The fresco in the choir was created in 1766. The fresco in the nave was created in 1767. It represents the scene of St. Bartholomew refusing to sacrifice to an idol. Medallions in the nave show the evangelists and, as in the choir, scenes from the life of Bartholomew. The decorative painting was renewed in 1912/13. The basis for this were the paintings from 1766/67. In the sacristy there is a representation of the hearts of Jesus and Mary, as well as wounds of Christ. This probably dates from the second half of the 18th century. There is also a ceiling picture in the sign. This was created in 1912/13 by Alois and Matthäus Haugg.
