History and architecture

St. Christopher

The counts of Arnsberg had before 1300 in the area north of the monastery Odacker a castle. Around this castle, the farmers from the area who sought protection settled. This settlement became a fortified place, which received city rights in 1308 . The parish of Hirschberg was separated from Allagen around 1340 and made an independent parish . From the small hall church in the late transition style of the 13th century, only the choir and the east yoke are preserved. The Counts of Arnsberg built Hirschberg and the parish church. At the suggestion of the von Weichs family, the choir room was redesigned in baroque style in the 17th century. The sacristy is built in half-timbered houses and is marked 1664. The architecture and proportions of today's church are based on the medieval predecessor church. It was built from 1956 to 1957 according to plans by the architect and church builder Heinrich Stiegemann . A baptistery was added to the west side of the baroque choir. The rising walls are structured by luminous ribbon windows, the designs were created by Vinzenz Piper. In the center of the chapel is a font from the Baroque period. A pilaster portal with a blown gable is integrated into the new building, which is marked 1708 in the chronogram . Occasionally, church music is performed in the building.

  • The double Madonna was created around 1700
  • The pulpit is a work from around 1680.
  • The baptismal font is carved and closable with a lid, it was made in the 18th century.
  • The crucifixion group was carved in the 18th century, the body is a work from the mid-16th century.
  • The furnishings are completed by some carved figures from the 17th century.

Bells

The church tower has a very sonorous six-part bell. In 1948 the Junker bell foundry in Brilon initially supplied three bronze bells with the tones f ', g' and a '. After the church had been rebuilt in 1956, three steel bells from the Bochum Association were also hung up; these sound in d ', c "and d". Bells III-VI sound on normal Sundays. Bells I and II only ring at high feasts, with bell II also being the death knell.
