St. Johannes (Markhausen)
St. Johannes in Markhausen , City of Friesoythe , is a branch church of the Catholic parish of St. Marien Friesoythe, which belongs to the Friesoythe deanery of the diocese of Münster .
History and description
Markhausen originally belonged to the parish Molbergen with the parish church of St. John Baptist and was probably before the 15th century abgepfarrt . All that is known about the earlier church building is that it was in poor condition as early as 1651. John the Baptist has been the church patron since 1654 .
1800, the old church was due to disrepair demolished and a simple hall church from brick without tower built. In the 20th century, Wilhelm Sunder-Plassmann rebuilt the church in two sections in the neo-baroque style: from 1921 to 1922, a transept and the lower part of a tower as well as a choir were added to the east side of the nave . In 1937 the nave was replaced by a new building and the tower was completed in 1938.
The extension in front of the main entrance on the west side dates from 1991 and 1992.
Furnishing
The high altar with crucifixion group was made between 1805 and 1807 by Georg Gerhart Wessel from Osnabrück in the classical style. A figure of Mary from around 1800, which was part of a depiction of the Annunciation , was probably also created by Wessel. The wooden baptismal font in cartilage style dates from the second half of the 17th century.
