History and architecture

During the renovation from 1968 to 1976, the remains of two previous buildings were excavated. The younger, probably from the 12th century, was a single-nave church with an apse and transept.

The parish was first mentioned in a document around 1310. The three-bay hall made of quarry stone with flat-closed side choirs was built around 1240 to 1245. The design is typical for the Sauerland . The sacristy and the porch were added in 1903. The exterior is unadorned. The choir is conspicuous, with a slightly recessed apse and low side choirs with semicircular wall niches attached to the one-bay main choir . These resemble the main choir, only they are smaller. The side choirs close flat on the outside. The walls of the nave are divided by arched windows, those of the side aisles and the side choirs are round. The sacristy has recently been added to the north wall of the choir, at the same time the vestibule of the south portal was built. The Affelner vernacular describes the vestibule as a mortuary , this is where the deceased used to be laid out. In the reopened south portal is a rough, Romanesque tympanum depicting the crucifixion, between the birth of Christ and the women at the grave. The tympanum is a copy from 1903; the women with the container hoods were wrongly reinterpreted as the three wise men with crowns. The tympanum on the north portal is a replica from 1973. Some fragments of the original, such as the Lamb of God or Christ in the mandorla , are kept in the church. The gable roof over the naves is uniform, followed by the slightly lower gable roof of the choir. A roof turret sits on the ridge, the crowning is similar to the west tower. The tent roof of the apse is polygonal, the side choirs are covered with pent roofs.

Cross vaults were drawn into the interior, the vault in the choir bay was later enlarged with an ogival arch. From 1970 to 1971 remains of a late Romanesque painting from the middle of the 13th century were uncovered. The figurative scenes were left in fragments, the architectural structure and the plant ornaments were added according to findings. In the apse calotte the Majestas Domini is depicted , in the chancel vault the Lamb of God with the evangelists. The Adoration of the Magi above the arcade of the northern side choir and the images of the apostles in the choir and in the apse are works from the second quarter of the 14th century. The side aisles are about half as wide as the central nave, which widens towards the choir.

Extensive backups had to be carried out around 1995. The foundation needed reinforcement and the exterior stones and plastering of the tower were restored.

tower

The squat west tower on a square floor plan has been crowned with a Welschen hood since the fire of 1814 and was later covered with copper . Its walls are considerably thicker than those of the church. It is plastered to protect the masonry. It is in front of the west wall and towers over the building by one storey . The walls are divided by sound openings arranged in pairs. The previously existing small intermediate columns no longer exist, they were probably destroyed in the fire.

Furnishing

Flemish altar
Altar (closed)
  • The splendid altarpiece with a carved shrine , painted wings and a crowning Rosary Madonna is a work from 1520 to 1525. It bears the mark of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke and is also known as the Antwerp Altar . It is decorated with representations from the life of Christ, Mary and St. Lambertus . These figures are considered exceptional. The circumcision of Jesus is shown in the temple , and the adoration of the newborn Jesus by the three kings is shown. Another theme is the death of Mary. The high central compartment is conspicuous for altars of this type, under a canopy the carrying of the cross can be seen, many soldiers and mourning women accompany him. Veronika kneels and hands a handkerchief. The crucifixion group in the picture above shows the crucifixion group. Angels float around Jesus and one of the fellow crucified averts his face. Among them are Captain Longinus , the high priest on horseback and a soldier on horseback with a lance. A kneeling woman with raised hands turns her back, this is Maria Magdalena . Johannes and several women try to help Mary. In addition to the crucifixion group, there are groups on consoles showing the crowning of thorns, Christ before Pilate, the descent from the cross and the entombment. The predella is decorated with pictures with the sacrifice of Melchizedech and the Manna rain in the desert. In the middle stands the risen Jesus , with his right hand he points to his side and the left hand held up shows the sign of the crucifixion. A large host floats above the chalice held up by two angels as a sign of the Eucharist . On the outside of the wings you can see King Olaf II of Norway, St. Lambertus, Anna selbdritt , St. Lucia and St. Olaf. The coat of arms of the city of Bergen above the Lambertus indicates a Norwegian client. After the Reformation that began in Brüggen from 1526 to 1536, he no longer accepted the work. The altar was extensively restored in 1972. It is one of the most famous Flemish carved altars from the late Gothic period .
  • The architect and artist Johannes Hillebrand from Cologne created the celebration altar in a consciously simple form. He made a matching ambo for this.
  • The wall painting of the 15th century, the sacrament niche with a tracery tympanum, was later largely ignored.
  • The marble baptismal font with handles in the form of grimaces originally comes from a profane context. The grimaces are supposed to keep bad spirits away. The wrought iron tripod frame was perhaps artfully made in the 17th century.
  • The organ prospectus by Johann Wirler is marked 1715. The carvings are works by Peter Sasse from Attendorn.
  • A 17th century painting shows the Holy Family and the Trinity at the same time . God the Father is surrounded by a group of angels, the Holy Spirit is represented as a dove. Christian iconography refers to such a scene as the earthly and heavenly trinity . The inscription in Latin, however, indicates the flight to Egypt.
  • Rosary Madonna from the beginning of the 16th century.
  • The clay Pietà , probably from the second half of the 17th century, has recently been given an obscure setting that looks like marble. The restrained lament shows parallels to the Baroque in Flanders. The depiction of Jesus is unusual. how he leans on his mother and the distant gaze of Mary.
  • An early Gothic crucifix with a wooden body enriches the furnishings. It already hung in the previous church and is known as a four-nail cross. In this type, the feet are not placed on top of each other, but are placed next to each other and each fastened with a nail.
  • Christian Nohl built the organ from 1714 to 1715.
  • The Stations of the Cross from 1953 are works by Liesel Bellmann from Münster.
