history

General

A church in Esch was first mentioned in a document in 1559. At that time, Esch was a branch of the Elsdorf parish. It was not until 1804 that the place was raised to an independent parish . Between 1808 and 1848 Angelsdorf belonged to the parish with the Church of St. Lucia as a subsidiary parish until the Angelsdorf parish was re-established in 1848. Until the French secularization , the abbot of the St. Pantaleon Abbey in Cologne had the right of collation .

Church building

The current Gothic bell tower was built in the 14th century . At the same time, the older, presumably Romanesque nave was also rebuilt. In 1555 the church was rebuilt and renovated again. In 1678, a fire severely damaged the roofs of the church. The damage was repaired by 1693. The nave was a three-aisled and three-bay brick building with a built-in bell tower and a choir, presumably closed on three sides . In a storm in 1921, the spire fell on the nave and choir and destroyed them. A completely new building was therefore necessary.

While maintaining the bell tower, today's church was finally built in the homeland security style in the 1920s .

architecture

St. Laurentius is a two-aisled, four-bay brick church with a two-storey west porch. The three-story Gothic bell tower is located on the north side of the porch. The basement of the tower is not structured. The two upper floors are divided on each side by two two-part blind arcades with tracery . On the upper floor these are open as sound windows in the upper half. An eight-sided, squat helmet crowns the tower. In the east the main nave closes with a semicircular apse . The main nave spans a wooden barrel vault and the side aisle a stone vault.

Furnishing

Among the furnishings, the colorfully painted figures of saints, the Way of the Cross , the wooden confessional and two side altars in the side aisle should be mentioned. They come from the time the nave was built. A modern folk altar and a modern tabernacle column are set up in the choir . They are carved from marble and erected after the Second Vatican Council . The stained glass windows very likely also date from the time it was built.

Bells

There is a four-part gray iron bell in the bell tower.
