The Catholic Chapel of St. Laurentius in Niederkastenholz , a district of Euskirchen in the Euskirchen district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), was built in the High Middle Ages . The St. Laurentius chapel is a protected architectural monument .

history

Around 1052, the Franconian royal estate of Flamersheim handed over all the lands around Niederkastenholz to the Kornelimünster Abbey, under whose rule a moated castle and a chapel were built. The exact time when the chapel was built is not known; it is believed to have been between the 11th century and the second half of the 13th century. The building material for this was obtained u. a. from the masonry of the Roman aqueduct, the Roman Canal - popularly known as the "devil's vein" - which ran north of Niederkastenholz and was useless at the time. In the masonry of the chapel there are sintered lime and gray wacke as well as Roman flat bricks and chunks of trass.

architecture

The quarry stone chapel is plastered and whitewashed. The three-aisled building has a recessed, rectangular choir . Above the west gable of the hipped roof is a slate roof turret from the 18th century, which is provided with sound arcades and ends in an eight-sided pyramid.

On the south side there is a flat-roofed vestibule that is used as a sacristy . Here is a so-called Sendbank made of Kalksinter, where the abbot or a monk from the Kornelimünster Abbey held an annual Send on St. Nicholas Day until the end of the 18th century . The cafeteria is also made of limestone from the Roman Canal .

The narrow main nave is separated from the aisles by shield arches . The two upper clad windows in the south are exposed, those in the north are covered by the roof and therefore do not allow light to penetrate into the church. The shield arches meet the triumphal arch directly . The choir is covered by a barrel vault.

On the west wall, a two-story wooden double gallery rises across the width of the central nave . It was probably built in the 18th century.

Remnants of Gothic frescoes were discovered during restoration work in the 1950s . They are located above the triumphal arch and depict female saints with a nimbus , but they may also be Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the apostle John. On the north side of the choir, ornamental paintings and fragments of a female saint have been preserved around the Gothic sacrament house.

Furnishing

The reredos of the main altar was created in the 18th century. In the niches are a Christ on the cross and figures of saints. In the altar of the north aisle there is a figure of St. Luzia . The altar of the south aisle has an altarpiece from the Baroque period , it represents the martyrdom of St. Sebastian . Above it stands the figure of St. Cornelius with a bishop's staff and bishop's hat and a horn in his left hand.

The Black Madonna was donated to the Laurentius Chapel in 1816. It is about 30 cm high and covered with medals and pearls. On the back of this figure you can read: “Announcing to know for all people who read this letter that this picture of the Virgin Mary with a curtain of an altar, on which the Lamb of God is presented, is what the wittib Carlina Müller living in Bonn has God's house given in 1816. And was exposed by me to Wilhelm Simonis Custor of the local chapel on December 8th of the same year as an ornament. And the same founder died in the Lord in 1819. Written by Niederkastenholz on December 19, 1819. Wilhelmus Simonis, Custor. "
