The Church of St. Gallus , St. Laurentius and St. Sebastian (in parlance only St. Laurentius ) is a Catholic church in the Alzenau district of Michelbach .

history

"Today's nave was already 1776/1777 at a place where previously since the Middle Ages, a chapel was built." It was in the early 1930s for the growing and independent parish Michelbach a transept and the chancel ( choir ) to today's church expanded. It was consecrated in 1932 by the Würzburg bishop Matthias Ehrenfried . Several renovations were necessary, most recently outside in 2001/2002. The last, very elaborate interior restoration, during which the two communion benches were also removed, took place in 2006 and 2007. In 2016 the church received a new organ that was built by the organ building company Martin Karle from Zellingen from three different sources. From the previous organ, which was completed by Michael Weise from Plattling in 1948, some functional parts, e.g. B. the cornice, reused. There were also many completely new parts, including the console with its two manuals. The heart of the new organ comes from Sailauf. Among other things, the pipes of the Hey organ, which were first used in 1974 in the Resurrection Church there, were installed. The new organ, which was therefore initially called the "Hey organ", was inaugurated on the Saturday before Pentecost 2016 and has since been renamed the "Karle organ".

Architecture and equipment

The church with the interior 18.35 m × 8.65 m large nave, tower (with real roof ), transept and chancel does not extend exactly to the east, as is usual in Catholic churches, but is offset slightly to the north (east Northeast). Apart from the separate entrance to the sacristy , it has four entrances, namely in the north in the transept, in the west (main entrance) in the nave and in the south in the nave as well as in an anteroom of the transept, which can also be used as a confessional or during a church service can be used by small children.

A figure of St. Lawrence stands in an outside niche above the main entrance. Inside, to the left and right of the main entrance, a wooden staircase leads to the gallery with the organ on the east wall. In front of the transition to the transept, which is two steps higher, there is a pietà in a niche on the left and a figure of St. Joseph in a corner formed by part of the church tower on the right .

At the transition from the nave to the transept is a baptismal font on a red sandstone plinth with the inscription "FONS AQVAE SALIENTIS IN VITAM AETERNAM" (source of the water that gushes into eternal life). On the north and south side of the transept, three high stained glass windows let in plenty of light and thus also illuminate its two side altars (on the left an altar of Mary, on the right a Christ altar), between which the chancel adjoins. 14 stations of the cross hang on the walls of the nave and transept . “The reliefs, arranged in pairs, were made in 1970 in the Heinzeller artist's workshop in Oberammergau from linden wood and designed with a colored glaze .” Two confessionals are set into the south wall of the transept.

At the transition from the transept to the chancel (with people's altar and final high altar ), the masonry forms a round arch, which is decorated with a fresco by the Glattbach painter Bergmann-Franken from 1932. It shows the 14 Holy Helpers in need on both sides in the lower part , six on the left and eight on the right.
The high altar is surrounded by four marble columns with Corinthian capitals and a curved architrave. A lamb lies on a book above the tabernacle, symbolizing the sacrificed Christ . The book bears the
seven biblical seals .

use

The church belongs to the parish community "Maria im Apostelgarten". On October 10, 2010, the parish of Michelbach and the Kuratien Kälberau and Albstadt joined forces. All three places are Alzenau districts. Regular mass celebrations and prayer times take place, which are published in the newsletter of the parish community. The patronage festival is only celebrated on the feast day of St. Lawrence.
