The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Margarethen is in Herda , a district of the city of Werra-Suhl-Tal in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . The parish Herda belongs to the parish Fernbreitenbach-Gospenroda in Kirchenkreis Eisenach-Gerstungen the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

The square ground floor of the choir tower is the oldest part of today's hall church . It dates from the 15th century. The church is dedicated to St. Margaretha . She is depicted on the keystone of the ribbed vault in the choir . The nave was expanded in 1613 and 1676. The nave is covered by a half-hip roof, the tower by an eight - sided slate - roofed tower with a curved hood topped by an open lantern .

Around 1700 the church received the baroque pulpit . The two-storey galleries of the nave date from the 19th century. The winged altar , created around 1510/20, has colored wooden reliefs . In the middle part of the altarpiece the crucifixion is depicted , on the left wing Christ on the Mount of Olives and the Carrying of the Cross , on the right wing the Lamentation and the Resurrection . The earlier paintings are no longer visible on the outside. Since the pictorial program did not contradict Lutheran teaching, the altarpiece was preserved after the Reformation . Two epitaphs by Herda date from the 16th century.

The organ with 13 registers , divided into two manuals and a pedal , was built in 1858 by Karl Friedrich Peternell.
