St. Marien (Neuenbeken)
St. Marien is a Catholic parish church in Paderborn - Neuenbeken in the Paderborn district , North Rhine-Westphalia . The church and parish belong to the Eggevorland deanery in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
Building description
The church is a Romanesque vault from the beginning of the 13th century . The building with nave and transept has the shape of a Latin cross in plan. St. Mary in its current form is probably the third church building at this point. A comprehensive restoration took place in 2009/10.
The church has a single nave and the nave has a single bay . The transept has niches in the east wall; the choir is currently closed. A sacristy is added to the north ; to the west is a 28 m high square tower with a gable roof and ridge turret. The cross vaults of the church rest on wall and corner pillars and are structured by round belt and blind arches. The arch in the transept is ogival. The sacristy is spanned by a barrel vault with stitch caps . The windows are arched, as are the sound holes in the tower.
The west portal, which has been modified several times, is crowned by a Pietá donated in 1666. In 1914/18 it was redesigned as a memorial for the fallen soldiers of 1864. The portal in the north transept, however, has been preserved in its original form. It is arched with corner pillars. In the tympanum a crucifixion scene is shown.
Bells
St. Marien has five bronze bells, the oldest of which dates from 1781. It has a diameter of 115 cm. Shortly before, in 1776, the church tower had burned down. The inscription on the old bell testifies to this:
- Hujus aeris campani fusio post incendium / secunda facta est anno MDCCLXXXI
- (The molten ore of this bell is restored after the fire in 1781)
- The bell founder, Master Fricken, is also mentioned.
The other four bells were made in the 1960s in the bell foundry Petit and Edelbrock in Gescher:

Wall painting
Fragments of Romanesque wall paintings have been preserved on the church walls. Neo-Romanesque paintings were removed between 1961 and 1964. The painting from the early 13th century was named Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe in September 2011 by the LWL Monument Preservation, Landscape and Building Culture in Westphalia . Particularly noteworthy are:
- The representation of the Last Supper on the west wall of the north transept .
- Jesus is shown with eleven disciples with halos and his favorite disciple John on his chest. Judas crouches in front of the table and hands Jesus something to eat. So here are shown 13 disciples with Jude.
- The body of Christ is supported by Joseph of Arimathea while Mary takes the right hand of her son. The nails with which Jesus was nailed to the cross are removed by two helpers using pliers. To the right of it stands the mourning disciple Johannes. On the very outside you can see the two thieves at their crosses. The good one on the left is recognizable through the angel above his head, the bad one on the right is accompanied by a devil.
- The mandorla with Christ enthroned in the choir vault
- To the right and left of the Savior are the symbols of the four evangelists . Originally only fragments were preserved here, which were added to a complete picture in the course of the renovation.
Furnishing
- The neo-Romanesque high altar
- The altar structure dates from 1900, the paintings and reliefs were created in the artist workshop Wagenbrenner and Krietemeyer. A special feature is the rotating and sliding mechanism, which allows different scenarios to be displayed alternately and thus to adapt them to the church year . In March 2017, the altarpiece, which was extensively restored in 2014/2015, was named Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe.
- The choir window
- Franz Knack from Münster created today's choir window in 1952 as a replacement for an original window that was destroyed in the Second World War. In the upper area the Trinity is shown: God the Father as an old man, the dove for the Holy Spirit. Jesus as a child plays a central role. Mary and Joseph sit downstairs and look at the child who has, as it were, risen from the manger.
- The font
- Berhard Witte donated the baptismal font in the south transept in 1665. However, the original substructure has not been preserved; it was reconstructed based on similar baptismal fonts. The baptismal font bears a Latin inscription, which translates as follows:
- The Rev. Father Bernhard Witte, Provost to St. Mary and Prior of the Order of Malta in Prague donated this in 1665.
- The door between the sacristy and the choir
- It dates from the Gothic period and has square panels.
- The sculpture Mary of Victory
- A sculpture of the Virgin hangs in the arch between the nave and the crossing . The work of art from the first half of the 18th century shows the crowned Mother of God standing on a globe. She holds a scepter in her right hand and puts one foot on a snake. The baby Jesus in her arm pushes a lance into the snake's jaws. As a symbol of the Holy Spirit, a dove with a halo of rays hovers above the figure .
- The two figures on the pillars of the choir presumably formerly belonged to a baroque high altar.
- More sculptures
- The following statues are attached to the four pillars of the nave:
- Elisabeth of Thuringia (1995 by Bruno Vienatzer)
- Saint Anthony of Padua (18th century)
- Saint Joseph (1926)
- Saint Aloisius of Gonzaga (1926)
organ
The current organ dates back to 1859 when an older organ was replaced. It was built by the organ builder August Randebrock from Paderborn. Over the years it has been renovated and expanded several times. Today it has 18 registers and 1161 pipes.
Liturgical devices
Some of the devices listed below are not in the church, but are on loan in the Paderborn Diocesan Museum.
- A Romanesque incense boat from the 13th century has been preserved. It is hammered from copper and shaped like an almond. The basin is engraved on the lower foot. The two-part lid is made of enamel and shows medallions with representations of angels.
- A 32.5 cm high goblet comes from France and was created at the end of the 18th century.
- A tower monstrance from the second half of the 16th century consists of 75 individual parts and shows u. a. the characters of Cosmas and Damian.
- A gospel book was created by the goldsmith P. Holtkamp from Warburg in 1992/93. The book covers are a replica of the missal from the castle chapel of Schellenberg in the Sauerland from 1592.
