history
The first mention of a Christian community in Schiffweiler dates back to 893. On February 17 of the year 893 was a monastery at Wibiliskirika ( Wiebelskirchen ) by the bishop of Metz , the church Letoldingos ( Illingen ) with an associated chapel to Scufinesvillare (Schiffweiler ) for free. A walled-in stone with the inscription 1088 in the choir of the former church in Schiffweiler suggests that a new church was built that year on the site of the old chapel. The church in Schiffweiler has been administered by a permanent vicar since 1293 . In 1483 a new church in the Gothic style was built, which was destroyed during the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) along with the whole place and was not rebuilt. Before that, the parish had become Protestant in 1575 . In the second half of the 17th century, settlers again settled in Schiffweiler, of whom the Catholics attended the service in Ottweiler . In 1796 a nave was added to the choir of the destroyed church and in 1803, with the reorganization of the French church, the Schiffweiler church was raised again to a parish church.
Between 1867 and 1869, today's church was built according to plans by the architect Carl Friedrich Müller ( Saarlouis ). Local construction management was carried out by municipal master builder Ernst Klauer (Ottweiler), while contractor Witt (Schiffweiler) was responsible for the execution. In 1947 the interior of the church was restored in which artist Walter Bernstein (Schiffweiler) was involved. In 1957 and 1970 ff. The church was subjected to further restoration measures. In 2002, the interior lighting and heating system were converted. In 2009 there was another extensive restoration, during which the Protestant community center in Schiffweiler was also used sacred. The restoration was managed by the architect Detlef Hoffmann, the execution was incumbent on the Glöckner company, natural stone works (Hangard) and the Mrziglod company ( Tholey ).
Furnishing
The church's furnishings include numerous figures of saints , a Way of the Cross and two angels - reliefs , which were restored and recast in 2009 by the restorer Manfred Schöndorf (Ottweiler). The relief of St. Martin with a horse and a beggar on the baptismal font to the left of the chancel was also redesigned. The neo-Gothic altar was taken over from the parish church of St. Remaclus in Cochem -Cond, which was demolished in 1974 . The 2 meter high Madonna (Pachermadonna) to the right of the chancel is a new acquisition.
The painting by the painter Walter Bernstein (Schiffweiler) from 1947 was painted over in 1957 and restored in 2009 by the Mrziglod (Tholey) company. The choir windows come from the glass burner Friedrich Geissler ( Ehrenbreitstein ). There is a tracery rose in the front of a transept .
organ
The organ of the church was built in 1933 by the organ building company Johannes Klais Orgelbau ( Bonn ). The instrument, which is set up on a gallery , has 28 registers , divided into two manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop action is electric.
