history

timeline

The great concern and wish of the Bishop of Münster , Dr. Michael Keller to plant smaller churches was welcomed by Provost Westhoff, pastor of St. Agatha. In accordance with the wishes of the bishop, the St. Nikolaus Church Building Association was founded in 1959. The members of the association tried to create additional help for the church building through donations and collections.

On December 6, 1962, the groundbreaking ceremony was quietly done. On June 6, 1963 the foundation stone was laid by Vicar General Laurenz Böggering with great sympathy from the parishioners . A lead sleeve with a certificate was walled in. Finally, on May 3, 1964, the church consecration in St. Nikolaus was carried out by Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich Tenhumberg . The congregation experienced its first solemn high mass in the completely filled church .

Provost Westhoff, his chaplains Lepping and Sicking and also the local Franciscan brothers looked after the community. On the first Sunday in September 1964, Pastor Wernsmann was introduced to his office as the first pastor of St. Nikolaus.

At Pentecost 2009 the parish of St. Nikolaus was dissolved and merged with the parishes of St. Agatha, St. Johannes and Heilig Kreuz to form the new parish of St. Agatha.

Concept of church

The ground plan of the church is based on a pentagon facing east . The soaring main room is surrounded by a ground-floor wreath that accommodates the entrances and side rooms. The filigree, free-standing bell tower also has a pentagonal floor plan. Two closed wall panels and a pillar in the pentagonal top carry the bell chamber and the helmet, which is crowned by the St. Nicholas ship, which can be seen from afar. In the pentagonal main room with a continuous upper band of windows, the actual room for the congregation is once again summarized by six supporting columns and a parabolic wall behind the altar island. The four bench blocks are aligned with the altar , which, thanks to the parabolic screen and the structure of the folded ceiling, is clearly the focal point of the room.

Below the organ gallery, lowered two steps, axially to the altar, emphasized by a wall and two columns, is the baptismal font , whose importance as an entrance sacrament to the community of the faithful is so clearly illustrated.

organ

The organ was built by the organ builder Franz Breil (Dorsten). The slider chests -instrument has 22 registers on two manuals and pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
