Church of St. Pankratius in Dossenheim

The Catholic Church of St. Pankratius in Dossenheim , a municipality in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg , was built between 1923 and 1926 according to plans by Hans Strobl in the neo-baroque style.

history

Patron St. Pankratius

A church in Dossenheim was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in 794 . In 1556, Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate . According to the principle of “ cuius regio, eius religio ”, Dossenheim with the church consecrated to St. Pankratius was first Lutheran and then reformed . However, for a long time there was a dispute between Kurmainz and the Electoral Palatinate over sovereignty over Dossenheim. In 1650 the dispute in the Bergstrasse recess was settled, after which the place remained with the Electoral Palatinate but the Catholics were now allowed to use the church. They celebrated their services in the choir, the Reformed in the nave.

Because of the growing number of Catholics, the Dossenheim church had become too small and in 1836 the community asked the Heidelberg Oberamt for help. But it was not until 1894 that a new church building association was founded. After lengthy negotiations, the Protestant community was ready to end the Simultaneum and pay the Catholics 35,000 marks. A plot of land was acquired in 1913, but construction did not begin because of the First World War . Construction finally began in 1923 and was headed by Hans Strobl, head of the archbishop's building authority in Heidelberg. After three years, the new St. Pankratius Church was given a name on June 27, 1926 , and in 1930 it was consecrated . The completion of the furnishing lasted until 1946. In 1999 the church was restored. The parish of St. Pancras belongs since 2003 with the Assumption in Schriesheim and St. Michael in Altenbach for Seelsorgeeinheit Schriesheim-Dossenheim in the deanery Heidelberg-Weinheim in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Freiburg .
