description

The formerly Romanesque hall church was changed several times. In the second half of the 13th century, it was expanded into a basilica in the architectural style . After a fire it was rebuilt without side aisles in 1550–55 , the nave was shortened to the west . The rectangular nave, built of quarry stone and covered with a half- hipped roof , shows on both sides the added pointed arcades to the broken side aisles and the rounded arched windows , the upper aisle of the former central nave. The top floor of the church tower in the southeast is covered with slate . The belfry is located behind its sound arcades . Above this is another eight-sided attachment that houses the tower clock . A hood sits on top of it , which ends with an open lantern with the tower ball .

The interior of the nave is flat , the choir is spanned with a transverse barrel vault. The altar was donated around 1670. The altarpiece, framed by twisted columns , shows the Lord's Supper . Carved statues of the apostles Peter and Paul from the end of the 15th century stand in wall niches . Above it is a crucifix from the same century. A carved savior serves as a conclusion . In front of the altar is a group of carved figures of a former predella , which was created around 1510. It shows how Christ blesses the children . The pulpit was built in at the beginning of the 17th century. The baptismal font is from 1550, a wooden figure of Maria comes from the 1st half of the 14th century. The von Hopffgarten family's gravestones date from the 15th century, 1558 and 1645.

The organ , built around 1680 by Jost Friedrich Schäffer from Bad Langensalza , is in a mighty prospect . It has 15 registers , divided into 2 manuals and a pedal , and has been extensively restored from 2018.
