history
A first church in "Slirefa", today's Bad Salzschlirf, was mentioned in 885. On August 28 of the same year she was given to the “Lord Jesus Christ, St. Virgin Mary and St. Vitus ” consecrated . A renewal followed in the first third of the 14th century. Extension or new construction of the medieval church in Salzschlirf began in 1702 and was completed by five pastors in 1728. The choir tower and the nave walls date from 1702/28. Construction began in 1702 according to Fulda plans under the direction of master mason Matthias Mattei, a church builder from Tyrol. The final tower superstructure was added in 1902/03. A simultaneous expansion of the nave to the west with a neo-baroque west facade with side round stair turrets took place in the same construction period. In 1964 a side chapel was added. The last interior renovation followed in 1992. New lighting fixtures were installed. In addition, the church was enriched by the installation of statues of the parish patron St. Vitus (nave, left), St. Sacred Heart of Jesus and a Pietà in the 1964 extension.
Furnishing
- three baroque altars and the pulpit with four evangelist statues from 1695, which originally come from the pilgrimage church Kleinheiligkreuz , which was secularized in 1805 , which was consecrated again in 1913 under the then Bishop Joseph Damian Schmitt after repurchasing and renovation with simpler furnishings .
- Paintings by Johann Andreas Herrlein are embedded in the top of the side altars
- The painted Way of the Cross from the second half of the 18th century comes from Herrlein’s workshop and also comes from Kleinheiligkreuz
- Font from the first half of the 16th century
- the church has six bells, four of which come from the renowned Otto bell foundry in Hemelingen / Bremen. The Otto family had four bronze bells as early as 1926, all of which were melted down in the world wars of the 20th century. After the war, Otto cast and delivered four bronze bells in 1950 and 1955.
