Power supply

On November 24, 1909, the "Elektrizitäts-Aktiengesellschaft", formerly Schuckert u. Co. from Nuremberg , to set up an overland center for the city of Ansbach, the district of Middle Franconia and beyond. In the corresponding contract with the municipal authorities of the city of Ansbach, the construction of an electricity distribution network at the expense of the city of Ansbach was also decided. The Ansbach electricity works began on May 20, 1910, and the control center was put into operation on December 1 of the same year. The first annual report for 1911 includes 370 "pure light consumers" and 184,616 kilowatt hours of electricity sold.

On January 8, 1913, the Franconian Überlandwerk Aktiengesellschaft (FÜW Nürnberg) was founded as the successor to the Franconian overland headquarters, which took over the supply of electricity to the city of Ansbach. The Ansbach electricity works acted as the distributor, according to the statutes of May 20, 1913, a municipal authority.

As a result of the First World War, the power station had to pass on electricity rationing and electricity price increases from the electricity supplier to consumers between 1918 and 1922. By 1921, 20,000 incandescent lamps, or an average of one per inhabitant, were connected to the power grid. In the next few years the number of house connections increased so that the electricity distribution network had to be expanded. The Reichsbahn was won as a new, larger customer, and the station complex including the locomotive shed received electrical lighting. In 1927 the cabling of the overhead line network began in the city center, and by 1932 almost ten kilometers of high-voltage cables, 28 kilometers of low-voltage cables and 2.6 kilometers of street lighting cables had been laid. From 1938, the Ansbach public utility company is allowed to calibrate electricity meters.

After frequent power cuts in the years after the Second World War, the situation returned to normal in 1949. In order to be able to meet the constantly growing demand for electricity, between 1950 and 1960 the consumer voltage that had been used up to that point was increased from 110/220 volts to 220/380 volts. At the same time, the high-voltage network was converted from 5,000 volts to 20,000 volts in 1955, making it more efficient. This work could be completed by 1980. In the years and decades that followed, the number of districts supplied grew due to incorporation, and in 1985 the network control room for electricity, gas, water and district heating was put into operation.

The most recent modernizations of the Ansbach electricity network are the new transfer stations in Winterschneidbach , Ansbach-Eyb and Ansbach-Draisstraße , which went into operation at the end of the 1990s .

Gas supply

Like the history of the power supply in Ansbach, the gas supply to the Markgrafenstadt began before the Stadtwerke Ansbach was founded in 2000. On June 7, 1858, it was decided to build a gas plant in Ansbach, which went into operation in 1859. The necessary money was raised by a stock corporation and the city of Ansbach, which became sole owner on July 1, 1872 and gradually expanded the supply of lighting and heating gas by the turn of the century. During the First World War and in the years after that, the people of Ansbach had to live with rationing of gas and price increases. The inflation from 1920 onwards also caused the prices of gas and its raw material coke to rise rapidly. The plans to integrate Ansbach into a Bavarian gas network with a connection to the Ruhr area, the Saar, Central Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland could not be realized.

During and after the Second World War there was again rationing and after an air raid in 1945 the gas works was so badly damaged that it had to be temporarily shut down. In 1963, with the shutdown of the gas works, the production of gas in Ansbach ended, while the delivery of long-distance gas from Nuremberg began. There was another change in 1974 when the urban area of ​​Ansbach was converted to natural gas supply, which led to a sharp increase in consumption. More and more private households as well as commercial and industrial companies can be connected to the natural gas network, which has been constantly expanded and expanded. Today, in addition to the urban area, it also includes neighboring villages such as Obereichenbach , Hennenbach , Brodswinden , Meinhardswinden , Elpersdorf , Schalkhausen , Kaltengreuth , Höfstetten and Neuses .

At the end of the 1990s, the high-pressure gas pipeline ring around Ansbach was completed and the new gas transfer station in Pfaffengreuth was put into operation in 2002 .

Water supply

Until the end of the 19th century, the people of Ansbach supplied themselves with water from public and private wells, which was brought in from sources outside the city. However, when the amount of water was no longer sufficient and its quality deteriorated, the municipal authorities of the city of Ansbach, on the advice of the Ansbach public utility company , commissioned a water pipe engineer to look for suitable water development areas near the city. The expert found what he was looking for in Gersbach .

The city of Ansbach bought the Gersbacher Quellen and decided to build a water supply system, the construction of which was completed in 1900. The water was pumped from Gersbach via a feeder line to the newly constructed elevated reservoir in Ansbach, which is almost 100 meters higher . A city pipe network initially connected 1,184 households to the first central water supply in the Markgrafenstadt .

The increasing water consumption led to the successive expansion and modernization of the waterworks and the distribution system. The two world wars resulted in restrictions and curfew in the supply of water, the construction of a new deep reservoir on Triesdorfer Straße in 1959 led to a significant improvement in the supply.
