Stairway to Heaven / Highway to Hell is a 1989 published compilation album , for the popular at the time hard rock -Bands as Skid Row , Bon Jovi , Motley Crue and Cinderella favorite works by other artists coverten . All of the groups involved in the album had also played at the Moscow Music Peace Festival , a medley of which is also on the album. The artists whose pieces were reinterpreted on the album had all fallen victim to alcohol or other drugs .

background

Doc McGhee , then manager of Mötley Crüe, Skid Row and the Scorpions, had become a criminal offender in 1986 by illegally importing large quantities of marijuana into the United States . On January 19, 1987, he had to answer for the first time before the North Carolina Federal Court , where he pleaded guilty. The possible sentence for the act was 20 years imprisonment . Instead of the originally imposed five-year prison sentence, McGhee received a long-term probation and, in addition to a fine, had to organize an anti-drug campaign , among other things .

To this end, he set up the Make A Difference Foundation, a foundation that was supposed to raise money for various anti-drug programs. In the course of this engagement McGhee organized the “Moscow Music Peace Festival”, at which Bon Jovi , Cinderella , the Russian rock band Gorky Park ( Russian: Парк Горького ), Mötley Crüe , Ozzy Osbourne , Scorpions and Skid Row performed. In addition, drummer Jason Bonham joined in for the finale, where musicians from the participating bands jammed . The festival was in the television broadcast and recording later on video cassette sold.

For the album Stairway to Heaven / Highway to Hell , the participating artists were asked to choose a song that they had always wanted to record. The only condition was that the title should come from an artist or group who had died or lost a member of alcohol or drug problems. The production took over Bruce Fairbairn ; Apart from a few exceptions, all the bands took the respective song in Fairbairn's Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver ( Canada on).

Among the artists whose songs were selected included The Who , whose drummer Keith Moon of his alcohol dependency had succumbed, the Sex Pistols , the loss of Sid Vicious had to complain, Jimi Hendrix , Tommy Bolin , Thin Lizzy , Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin .

For the album, the John Bonham piece Moby Dick was recorded, which was recorded by drummers Tico Torres (Bon Jovi), Jason Bonham, and Mickey Curry and Jim Vallance (drums and percussion ). They traded under the name Drum Madness on the album.
