Stanislaw Nawka

Stanislaw Nawka (born May 16, 1960 in Bautzen ) is a German-Sorbian doctor. He practices as a general practitioner in Hamburg and became known nationwide for his social commitment.

Life

Stanislaw Nawka is Sorbe and grew up with ten siblings in the East Saxon village of Ostro . He studied medicine in Leipzig and moved to Hamburg in March 1989. There he runs a general practice practice in the Bergstedt district .

Since 1996 Nawka has been volunteering in an aid project run by Hamburg's Caritas to provide basic medical care for homeless people. He goes every Wednesday with the used by Caritas to sick Mobile - a converted to a "rolling doctor's office" minibus - with and is the physicians working at the longest there. Nawka treats up to 1,700 homeless people a year. During his vacation, he regularly treats the rural population in Namibia free of charge, who cannot afford medical help.

Nawka and its great social commitment have been reported several times in regional and national media , such as in newspapers and magazines as well as on radio and television. The documentary filmmaker Ute Jurkovics shot a film portrait of his work for NDR television in 2009 , which was shown not only on NDR but also on WDR and MDR as well as nationally in EinsPlus and Phoenix .

Stanislaw Nawka is married and has three children.

Honors

In 2009, Nawka was honored with the Brisant Brillant media prize from the ARD tabloid magazine Brisant for his voluntary work as a “hero of everyday life” . In 2010 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his commitment to helping the homeless .
