Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (original title Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation ) is an American science fiction - action film from the year 2004 . It is a sequel to the film Starship Troopers from the year 1997 . The characters and the plot, unlike in the first film, have nothing in common with the novel Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein . The German premiere was on May 25, 2004. The film was indexed until July 2019, after a re-examination by the FSK, the unabridged version received an age rating of 18 years and over.

action

A detachment of the Mobile Infantry lands on a planet controlled by the arachnoids.

These bugs ( English literally "bed bugs", generally "insects" or "vermin") or "pseudo-arachnida" are an alien, spider-like species from the planet Klendathu and the main opponent of humans in the "bug war".

The Troopers are surrounded by the enemy and suffer heavy losses. Since they cannot be picked up, they withdraw to an abandoned outpost. There they meet the highly decorated ex-captain Dax. He was demoted and imprisoned for murdering his commanding officer. His reason: the officer gave nonsensical orders and accepted the death of many soldiers.

After the outpost has been successfully defended against attacking bugs, more soldiers join in, some of whom have survived for months without contact with the troops. As it turns out later, however, a few of these soldiers are infected with a new bug that takes complete control of the human body. They gradually infect the other soldiers by spreading a parasite through their mouths.

When it is almost too late, the telepathic, pregnant soldier Private Lei Sahara realizes the danger. Together with Dax, she begins the fight against the infected.

The infected General JG Shepherd poses a particular danger: he was infected by the naked soldier Charlie Soda in his bed and would have direct contact with the leadership of the Federation after the imminent evacuation. This would mean the annihilation of humanity from within.

Shortly before the base is evacuated, Dax manages to catch the general and kill him. But since this is happening in front of the rescue squad and Dax has already murdered his commanding officer, he decides to die in battle instead of being judged by the Federation military tribunal.

The new threat to the Federation is communicated through the rescued Lei Sahara. In the form of propaganda commercials, it is shown that Dax is being rehabilitated in retrospect and that his fight and death are exploited for propaganda purposes in order to make him a hero of the Federation.

Reviews

Bill Beyrer wrote on cinemablend.com that the film was bad, even though the subject had potential. The actors are unknown. The special effects are not bad, but you can see that they are animated.

"A continuation of the controversial film 'Starship Troopers' produced for television, which suffers from the unenlightening studio light and tries in vain to make itself interesting with drastic splatter effects."

“While the original became a cult with a gaudy orgy of effects and caustic criticism of fascism, the sequel with its echoes of The Hidden remains pale. Director Tippett was the expert on special effects for the first part. Conclusion: Amateurs, not heroes, worked here. "

Awards

The film won the 2005 Saturn Award for Best DVD Release .
