Stepas Butautas (born August 25, 1925 in Kaunas , Lithuania , † March 22, 2001 in Kaunas) was a Lithuanian basketball coach and player.
Life
College career
In 1948 Butautas graduated from the Kūno kultūros institutas (KKI) and taught from 1951 to 1975 at the Kauno politechnikos institutas (KPI) in Kaunas . Since 1962 he was a member of the CPSU . From 1971 he was head of the chair for physical education at the KPI, from 1978 head of the chair for sports games at the KKI.
Sports career
Butautas was from 1947 to 1953 as a player of Žalgiris Kaunas member of the national basketball team of the USSR and won three gold medals at European basketball championships . In 1952 he won at the Olympic Games in Finland Helsinki the silver medal. After the end of his active career, in addition to his university teaching activities, he was also the coach of the women’s national team of the USSR from 1958 to 1964 . With the women's selection, he won the world championship title for the first time in 1959, which was defended in 1964, and the gold medal at the European championships three times. From 1967 to 1970 he was the coach of the Cuban men's national team, with which he took part in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City and in the finals of the 1970 World Basketball Championship . From 1975 to 1978 he was also head coach of Žalgiris.

His son Ramūnas (* 1964) is also a successful basketball coach and player.
